National monitoring of iodine, sodium, and vitamin D status in toddlers and women of childbearing age - results and lessons learned from a pilot study in Norway
CONCLUSION: Lessons learned from the pilot study will be used to design a national monitoring program for toddlers and women of childbearing age in Norway. The results indicate that 2-year-old children and women of childbearing age in Norway may have inadequate iodine intakes at the group level, while for vitamin D, most of the mothers had adequate status.PMID:37691743 | PMC:PMC10492227 | DOI:10.29219/fnr.v67.9088

Sodium Trifluoroacetate mediated Copper-Catalyzed < em > aza < /em > -Michael addition of < em > α,β < /em > -unsaturated olefins with aromatic amines
We present a sodium trifluoroacetate (CF3CO2Na) mediated copper-catalyzed aza-Michael addition of aromatic amines with activated olefins under mild, aqueous reaction conditions. This simplistic protocol employs a copper catalyst (10 mol%) and water as solvent. This transformation occurs precisely with aromatic substituted amines containing both electron-donating (EDG) and electron-withdrawing (EWG) groups. A broad range of substrates were tested under the optimized conditions, which are producing good to moderate yields.PMID:37694227 | PMC:PMC10486139 | DOI:10.1016/j.tetlet.2023.154520

Inhibition of carbonic anhydrase using aspirin is a novel method to block schistosomiasis infection of the parasitic trematode, Schistosoma mansoni, in the intermediate snail host, Biomphalaria glabrata
In this study, we investigated the role of CA inhibition in B. glabrata snails exposed to S. mansoni miracidia. We analyzed the expression of the B. glabrata CA encoding transcript in juvenile susceptible and resistant snails, with and without exposure to S. mansoni. Our results showed that the expression of the CA mRNA encoding transcript was upregulated during early and prolonged infection in susceptible snails (BBO2), but not in the resistant BS-90 stock. Notably, sodium salicylate, a form of aspirin, inhibited the expression of CA, post-exposure, to the parasite. Increasing research between parasites and cancer has sho...

Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter 2 Inhibitors and Pathological Myocardial Hypertrophy
Curr Drug Targets. 2023 Sep 7. doi: 10.2174/1389450124666230907115831. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors are a new type of oral hypoglycemic drugs that exert a hypoglycemic effect by blocking the reabsorption of glucose in the proximal renal tubules, thus promoting the excretion of glucose from urine. Their hypoglycemic effect is not dependent on insulin. Increasing data shows that SGLT2 inhibitors improve cardiovascular outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes. Previous studies have demonstrated that SGLT2 inhibitors can reduce pathological myocardial hypertrophy with or with...

Investigating the effects of irrigation with indirectly recharged groundwater using recycled water on soil and crops in semi-arid areas
Environ Pollut. 2023 Sep 8:122516. doi: 10.1016/j.envpol.2023.122516. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe utilization of direct wastewater for irrigation poses many environmental problems such as soil quality deterioration due to the accumulation of salts, heavy metals, micro-pollutants, and health risks due to undesirable microorganisms. This hampers its agricultural reuse in arid and semi-arid regions. To address these concerns, the present study introduces a recent approach that involves using indirectly recharged groundwater (GW) with secondary treated municipal wastewater (STW) for irrigation through a Soil Aquifer Trea...
