Peripheral Neuropathy in Adolescents and Young Adults With Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes From the SEARCH for Diabetes in Youth Follow-Up Cohort: A pilot study.
CONCLUSIONSDPN prevalence among youth with type 2 diabetes approached rates reported in adult populations with diabetes. Our findings suggest not only that youth with diabetes are at risk for DPN but also that many already show measurable signs of DPN. PMID: 24144652 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Sara—the Search and Rescue Dog—and her Game of Fetch
Editor’s note: Jana Sweeny is the American Red Cross’s Director of International Communications. She and her team are traveling around Colombia this week, visiting communities made safer by the Red Cross.   As we walk into the Colombian Red Cross training center in Pereira, a yellow lab comes bouncing up, waving her tail enthusiastically. The ball in her mouth turns out to be a lime and she is ready to play fetch. Because I can never say no to a dog, I begin a game of “fetch the lime” with her. It turns out that Sara isn’t just a fun companion–she is a retired search and rescue dog.  The Colo...

Complementary, Alternative, and Other Noncomplete Decongestive Therapy Treatment Methods in the Management of Lymphedema: A Systematic Search and Review
Conclusions: No interventions were ranked as “recommended for practice” based on the Putting Evidence into Practice guidelines. Two treatment modalities in 3 studies were ranked as “likely to be effective” in reducing LE or in managing secondary LE complications. Consideration should be given that many of the PAMs demonstrate long-standing support within the literature, with broad parameters for therapeutic application and benefit for secondary conditions associated with LE. However, further investigation as to their individual contributory value and the factors that contribute to their efficacy, specific to LE, h...

The search for extraterrestrial intelligence - podcast
The most intensive ever search for alien lifeThis week it was revealed that astronomers are about to start the most intensive ever search for alien life. The Breakthrough Listen project will scan stars in 100 galaxies for radio and optical signatures that indicate someone, or something, is out there.Until now, the search for extraterrestrial intelligence - or SETI - has been met with an eerie silence. What makes scientists so convinced it's worthwhile looking for alien life? Continue reading...

Full-profile search – match by the Rietveld method
A new search – match procedure has been developed and tested which, in contrast to previously existing methods, does not use a set of lines identified from a diffraction pattern, but an optimized Rietveld fitting on the raw data. Modern computers with multicore processors allow the routine to be fast enough to perform the entire search in a reasonable time using quite large databases of crystal structures. The search – match is done using the crystal structures for all phases and the instrumental geometry, and as such can be applied to every kind of diffraction experiment, including X-rays, thermal/time-of-flight neutr...

Tasmania Fires Rage On as Police Search Burned Homes
By Morag MacKinnonPERTH, Australia (Reuters) - Australian police and defense forces searched burned-out vehicles and homes in the towns worst hit by wildfires on the island of Tasmania, where more than 40 fires still raged on Sunday. The blazes began on Thursday on the state's thinly populated southeastern coast, amid a fierce heatwave and strong winds. The heat eased over the weekend, slowing the fires, but late on Sunday firefighters issued an emergency warning for residents in Taranna, 47 km (29 miles) east of the state capital Hobart, where a fire burning for more than three days threatened residents. The national weather...
