The Impact of Focused Cardiac Ultrasound Performed by Pediatric Intensivists: A Prospective Study
Conclusions The echocardiogram changed the clinical impression and therapeutic plan in almost half of the patients. These data show the value of focused cardiac ultrasound as a diagnostic and hemodynamic monitoring tool in pediatric intensive care and emphasize the importance of a rigorous training program.

Novel Internal Medicine Residency Ultrasound Curriculum Led by Critical Care and Emergency Medicine Staff
CONCLUSIONS: A curriculum comprised of a 9-hour workshop followed by a longitudinal hands-on experience can provide improvement in internal medicine resident POCUS knowledge and confidence. Point-of-Care Lung Ultrasound to Diagnose the Etiology of Acute Respiratory Failure at Admission to the PICU*
CONCLUSIONS: In contrast to literature demonstrating high utility differentiating the cause of acute respiratory failure in adults, blinded point-of-care lung ultrasound demonstrates moderate sensitivity and specificity in identifying the etiology of pediatric acute respiratory failure at admission to the PICU among children with bronchiolitis, pneumonia, and status asthmaticus.

Neuromonitoring During Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation: A Systematic Review of the Literature
Conclusions: Data supporting the use and effectiveness of current neuromonitoring methods are limited. Most studies have modest sample sizes, are observational in nature, and include patient populations that are of different ages and pathologies, with very limited data for pediatric and adult ages. Well-designed studies with adequate power and standardized short- and long-term outcomes are needed to develop guidelines for neuromonitoring and ultimately neuroprotection in patients on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.

Cerebrovascular Physiology During Pediatric Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation: A Multicenter Study Using Transcranial Doppler Ultrasonography*
Conclusions: Flow velocities in the middle cerebral arteries of children requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation are significantly lower than published normative values for critically ill, mechanically ventilated, sedated children. Significant differences in measured systolic flow velocity, diastolic flow velocity, and mean flow velocity were not identified in children suffering ischemic injury compared with those who did not. However, increased pulsatility index may be a marker for ischemic injury in young infants on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.

Long-Axis In-Plane Approach Versus Short-Axis Out-of-Plane Approach for Ultrasound-Guided Central Venous Catheterization in Pediatric Patients: A Randomized Controlled Trial*
Conclusions: The long-axis in-plane approach for ultrasound-guided central venous catheterization is a useful technique for avoiding posterior wall puncture in pediatric patients, compared with the short-axis out-of-plane approach.

Bedside Ultrasound for Tracheal Tube Verification in Pediatric Emergency Department and ICU Patients: A Systematic Review*
Conclusion: Bedside ultrasound has been described to be feasible in determining tracheal tube placement in several small single center studies and could be a useful adjunct tool in confirming tracheal tube placement in critically ill pediatric patients, but further studies are needed to assess its accuracy in a randomized multicenter setting.
