Oncological recurrence following pathological complete response after neoadjuvant treatment in patients with esophageal cancer - a retrospective cohort study
CONCLUSION: Distant recurrence is the predominant site of treatment failure in patients with pCR and non-pCR grade 1a regression, whereby recurrence rates are much higher in patients with non-pCR.PMID:37721586 | DOI:10.1007/s00423-023-03100-2

A case of alpha-fetoprotein-positive thymic small cell carcinoma: a case report
CONCLUSIONS: Our present clinical experience indicates the importance of histological examination for determining AFP-positive anterior mediastinal tumor treatment. Although AFP-positive neuroendocrine tumor of the thymus is relatively rarer than germ cell carcinoma, differential diagnosis with use of a histological examination should be considered because of the potentially poorer prognosis. The present clinical findings for an AFP-positive neuroendocrine tumor of the thymus case are considered useful for establishing an optimal treatment strategy in the future.PMID:37721573 | DOI:10.1186/s40792-023-01750-4

Stimuli-Responsive Codelivery System Self-Assembled from < em > in Situ < /em > Dynamic Covalent Reaction of Macrocyclic Disulfides for Cancer Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Chemotherapy
ACS Appl Mater Interfaces. 2023 Sep 18. doi: 10.1021/acsami.3c10245. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSupramolecular self-assembly has gained increasing attention to construct multicomponent drug delivery systems for cancer diagnosis and therapy. Despite that these self-assembled nanosystems present surprising properties beyond that of each subcomponent, the spontaneous nature of co-self-assembly causes significant difficulties in control of the synthesis process and consequently leads to unsatisfactory influences in downstream applications. Hence, we utlized an in situ dynamic covalent reaction based on thiol-disulfide excha...

Clinical outcomes of conversion surgery following immune checkpoint inhibitors and chemotherapy in stage IV gastric cancer
CONCLUSIONS: Conversion surgery holds the potential for significant survival benefits in stage IV GC patients who have achieved a favorable clinical response to immunochemotherapy. Individuals with signet ring cell carcinoma may experience increased post-conversion surgery recurrence.PMID:37720943 | DOI:10.1097/JS9.0000000000000738

Third-line treatment patterns and clinical outcomes for metastatic colorectal cancer: a retrospective real-world study
CONCLUSION: Chemotherapy combined with or without targeted therapy remained dominated third-line choice and showed favorable efficacy compared with anti-angiogenic monotherapy. With the application of more types and quantities of effective drugs, patients would achieve better survival.PMID:37720594 | PMC:PMC10501067 | DOI:10.1177/20406223231197311

Navigating the challenges of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis in lung cancer treatment: a propensity score study
CONCLUSIONS: IPA tended to be diagnosed more frequently in patients receiving chemotherapy or immune checkpoint inhibitors. Patients diagnosed with IPA are associated with shorter survival. Larger cohort studies are needed to verify the observations.PMID:37720497 | PMC:PMC10503299 | DOI:10.1177/17588359231198454

Controversies in the surgical management of esophageal adenocarcinoma
J Gastrointest Oncol. 2023 Aug 31;14(4):1919-1926. doi: 10.21037/jgo-22-713. Epub 2023 Aug 30.ABSTRACTThe incidence of esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) has risen dramatically over the last decade. Over this same period, our understanding and treatments have been revolutionized. Just over a decade ago, the majority of patients with locally advanced esophageal cancer went directly to surgery and our overall survival was bleak. Our current strategy for locally advanced esophageal adenocarcinoma is a multi-disciplinary approach. This approach consists of chemotherapy plus or minus radiation followed by surgical resection follow...

Integration of palliative care in the management of oral squamous cell carcinoma
Bioinformation. 2023 Jan 31;19(1):1-4. doi: 10.6026/97320630019001. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTOral Squamous cell Cancers (OSCC) is strongly associated with tobacco consumption. We here in present a case study of a OSCC patient who refused standard oncological care (SOC), to highlight the importance of integrating palliative care (PC) for improved patient outcomes. A 61 years male patient, with history of chewing tobacco for more than 20 years and diagnosed to have OSCC for 1.5 years presented with severe anaemia and a cauliflower-like growth (12 x 10 cm) in the left oral cavity and cheek with greenish-yellow discharge. In Vitro and In Vivo Effects of Docetaxel and Dasatinib in Triple-Negative Breast Cancer: A Research Study
Conclusions TNBC is a difficult-to-treat oncologic condition, even in an experimental setting. Promising results concerning the addition of targeted therapies (dasatinib) to the conventional cytotoxic ones (docetaxel) have been shown, awaiting further evaluation.PMID:37719631 | PMC:PMC10500968 | DOI:10.7759/cureus.43534

MiR-4270 acts as a tumor suppressor by directly targeting Bcl-xL in human osteosarcoma cells
Front Oncol. 2023 Aug 31;13:1220459. doi: 10.3389/fonc.2023.1220459. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTChondrosarcomas and osteosarcomas are malignant bone tumors with a poor prognosis when unresectable or metastasized. Moreover, radiotherapy and chemotherapy could be ineffective. MiRNAs represent an alternative therapeutic approach. Based on high-throughput functional screening, we identified four miRNAs with a potential antiproliferative effect on SW1353 chondrosarcoma cells. Individual functional validations were then performed in SW1353 cells, as well as in three osteosarcoma cell lines. The antiproliferative and cytotoxic effe...

Performance comparison of photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy with visible-light-activated organic dyes: Rose bengal, crystal violet, methylene blue, and toluidine blue O
This study evaluated the photobiocidal performance of four widely distributed visible-light-activated (VLA) dyes against two bacteria (Staphylococcus epidermidis and Escherichia coli) and two bacteriophages (phages MS2 and phi 6): rose bengal (RB), crystal violet, methylene blue, and toluidine blue O (TBO). The photobiocidal performance of each dye depended on the relationship between the type of dye and microorganism. Gram-negative E. coli and the non-enveloped structure of phage MS2 showed more resistance to the photobiocidal reaction than Gram-positive S. epidermidis and the enveloped structure of phage phi 6. RB had th...

Prevalence and clinical correlations of SF3B1 variants in lactotroph tumours
CONCLUSIONS: SF3B1 variants are uncommon in lactotroph tumours but may be frequent in metastatic lactotroph tumours. When present, they associate with aggressive tumour behaviour and worse clinical outcome.PMID:37721395 | DOI:10.1093/ejendo/lvad114

Using a Modified Delphi Panel to Estimate Health Service Utilization for Patients with Advanced and Non-Advanced Systemic Light Chain Amyloidosis
CONCLUSION: Experts estimated advanced patients, who would not be good candidates for HSCT, would have high rates of hospitalization (traditionally the most expensive type of healthcare utilization) and other health service use. The development of new treatment options that can facilitate organ recovery and improve function may lead to decreased utilization.PMID:37719133 | PMC:PMC10503521 | DOI:10.2147/CEOR.S412079
