Systematic literature search in PubMed : A short introduction.
Abstract In order to identify current (and relevant) evidence for a specific clinical question within the unmanageable amount of information available, solid skills in performing a systematic literature search are essential. An efficient approach is to search a biomedical database containing relevant literature citations of study reports. In this article, we explain step by step how to perform a systematic literature search via PubMed (MEDLINE) by means of an example research question in the field of ophthalmology. First, we demonstrate how to translate the clinical problem into a well-framed and searchable r...

Strategies to optimize MEDLINE and EMBASE search strategies for anesthesiology systematic reviews. An experimental study.
CONCLUSIONS: In view of these results, we recommend that the search terms used should include both preferred and non-preferred terms (i.e. variant spellings and direct/indirect order of the same term) and associated MeSH and EMTREE terms, in order to develop highly-sensitive search strategies for systematic reviews. Internet search by the patients undergoing  hernia surgery about the disease and surgeon selection
ConclusionsLess than two-thirds of the hernia patients make Internet search about their disease. Higher education level, younger age, patient ’s preference for minimally invasive surgery and living in a city positively affect Internet search rates.

Evaluation of Open Access Websites for Anesthesia Education
CONCLUSIONS: We found 37 open access websites for anesthesia education available on the Internet. Many of these websites may serve as a valuable resource for anesthesia clinicians looking for self-directed learning resources and for educators seeking to curate resources into thoughtfully integrated learning experiences. Ongoing efforts are needed to expand the number and improve the existing open access websites, especially with interactivity, to support the education and training of anesthesia providers in even the most resource-limited areas of the world. Our findings may provide recommendations for those educators and o...

GoogleFOAM
The expansion of the FOAM world is a bit like blowing up a balloon. The early stages involved a lot of effort for a small increase in size, but as it gets bigger, the resistance is falling away and expansion is getting faster and faster. Obviously this is a good thing. But it can make it easier for us all to get lost and there is the danger of information overload — indeed, I’ve written a guide to (in)sanity in the age of FOAM that I continually update, the LITFL post on Information Overload. The FOAM world is now impossible to keep up with. We need to be able to find what we want when we need it, according to our ...

Acupuncture for Post-stroke Shoulder-Hand Syndrome: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Conclusions: Acupuncture therapy seems effective for motor function, pain relief and activities of daily living in stroke patients with mild SHS, when it is used in combination with rehabilitation. The low certainty of evidence downgrades our confidence in making recommendations to clinical practice. Introduction Shoulder-hand syndrome (SHS) is a common condition among people who have had a stroke, with its reported prevalence ranging from 12% to 49% (1, 2). The main symptoms of SHS include pain, hyperalgesia, joint swelling and limitations in range of motion (ROM) (3). Post-stroke SHS is also named type I complex ...

Comparison of Transnasal Humidified Rapid-Insufflation Ventilatory Exchange and Facemasks in Preoxygenation: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
CONCLUSIONS: THRIVE does not have a greater advantage over a facemask in improving apnea time, oxygenation time, PCO2, and SpO2, but it has an advantage in improving arterial partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2) after preoxygenation, which can improve PaO2 well. This trial is registered with the protocol registration number CRD42021268143.PMID:35872871 | PMC:PMC9300319 | DOI:10.1155/2022/9858820

Management of Neuromuscular Block in Pediatric Patients — Safety Implications
AbstractPurpose of ReviewWe summarize the current status of neuromuscular blockade monitoring and reversal strategies in children, and the gaps that exist in our knowledge and approach compared to adult practice.Recent FindingsChildren experience residual neuromuscular blockade and are at risk of subsequent complications, though this is less well studied compared to adults. Objective (quantitative) monitoring of neuromuscular blockade in children has been challenging due to patient size and surgical positioning. Recent dosing indications for sugammadex in children and advances in objective monitoring may provide measures t...
