Periodontal therapy for primary or secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease in people with periodontitis
CONCLUSIONS: For primary prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in people diagnosed with periodontitis and metabolic syndrome, very low-certainty evidence was inconclusive about the effects of scaling and root planning plus antibiotics compared to supragingival scaling. There is no reliable evidence available regarding secondary prevention of CVD in people diagnosed with chronic periodontitis and CVD. Further trials are needed to reach conclusions about whether treatment for periodontal disease can help prevent occurrence or recurrence of CVD.PMID:36194420 | DOI:10.1002/14651858.CD009197.pub5

Alternatives to DEXA for the assessment of bone density: a systematic review of the literature and future recommendations
CONCLUSIONS: Osteoporosis is increasingly recognized as a significant risk factor for complications after spinal fusion surgery. Consequently, preoperative assessment of BMD is a critical factor to consider in planning surgical treatment. Although DEXA has been the gold standard for BMD measurement, other imaging modalities, including MRI, oCT, and qCT, appear to be viable alternatives and may offer cost and time savings.PMID:36609369 | DOI:10.3171/2022.11.SPINE22875

How to apply evidence-based practice to the use of artificial intelligence in radiology (EBRAI) using the data algorithm training output (DATO) method
CONCLUSION: Considering DATO in the application of EBR to AI is a simple systematic approach to this potentially daunting subject.ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE: The growth of AI in radiology means that radiologists and related professionals now need to be able to review not only clinical radiological literature but also research using AI methods.Considering Data, Algorithm, Training and Output in the application of EBR to AI is a simple systematic approach to this potentially daunting subject.PMID:37086062 | DOI:10.1259/bjr.20220215

Outcomes of HSV-1 encephalitis infection in glioblastoma: An integrated systematic analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Superimposed HSE in GBM may contribute to a significant reduction in OS compared to uninfected controls, potentially activating proto-oncogenes during active infection and latency. Preoperative HSE may induce an antiviral immune response, which may serve as a positive prognostic factor. Prompt antiviral treatment upon co-occurrence is necessary.PMID:37343897 | DOI:10.1016/j.micpath.2023.106211

Outcomes of arthroscopic versus open reduction and internal fixation for the treatment of acute traumatic lunate fractures: a systematic review
Hand Surg Rehabil. 2023 Jun 24:S2468-1229(23)00114-7. doi: 10.1016/j.hansur.2023.06.006. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe purpose of the study was to compare outcomes of fully-arthroscopic reduction and internal fixation (ARIF) versus open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) to treat acute traumatic lunate fractures. A literature search was conducted using Medline and Embase. Demographic data and outcomes were extracted for included studies. The search identified 2,146 references: 17 articles were included, reporting on 20 cases (4 ARIF and 16 ORIF). No differences between ARIF and ORIF were found in rate of union (100...

International Urogynecology consultation chapter 2 committee 3: the clinical evaluation of pelvic organ prolapse including investigations into associated morbidity/pelvic floor dysfunction
ConclusionsThe clinical pelvic examination remains the central tool for evaluation of POP and a system such as the POP-Q or S-POP should be used to describe and quantify. The value of investigation for urinary tract dysfunction was discussed and findings presented. The routine addition of GI radiographic or physiological testing is currently not recommended. There are no data on the role of the routine assessment of pain or sexual function, and this area needs more study. Imaging studies alone cannot replace clinical examination for the assessment of POP.
