Improving the Performance of Poly(caprolactone)-Cellulose Acetate-Tannic Acid Tubular Scaffolds by Mussel-Inspired Coating
In this study, tubular scaffolds consisting of a composite of poly(caprolactone), cellulose acetate, and tannic acid (TA) were electrospun, and then the scaffolds were treated with different Fe(III) solutions (iron(III) chloride hexahydrate (FeCl3'6H2O)) to obtain four tubular scaffolds: F0, F5, F15, and F45. According to scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and field emission-SEM results, TA/Fe(III) complex is coated on the fiber of the scaffold after post-treatment; the fiber surface morphology changes with different Fe(III) concentrations. This provides designability to the performance of tubular scaffolds. The tensile st...

Novel carbon-based composites enriched with Fe and Mn as effective and eco-friendly adsorbents of heavy metals in multicomponent solutions
Chemosphere. 2023 Aug 25:139958. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2023.139958. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWith increasing demand for adsorbents highly effective in pollutant removal, carbon-based porous materials are becoming more and more popular. In this work, a new approach to the synthesis of such solids using an environmentally friendly, two-step preparation method is presented. A series of hybrid porous silica-containing carbon composites was synthesized, namely: metal free (C/SiO2), enriched with manganese (C/Mn/SiO2), as well as iron (C/Fe/SiO2). The effect of additives on the structure and morphology of the composite...

Total iron binding capacity: an independent predictor of prognosis for pulmonary arterial hypertension in systemic lupus erythematosus
CONCLUSION: SI was negatively correlated with WHO-FC, and positively correlated with 6MWD and TAPSE. Furthermore, TIBC was associated with improved outcomes of patients with SLE-PAH, which could be an independent predictor of prognosis. Further research is needed to verify the findings.PMID:37605880 | DOI:10.1080/03009742.2023.2240586

Defining Mitochondrial Cristae Morphology Changes Induced by Aging in Brown Adipose Tissue
Adv Biol (Weinh). 2023 Aug 21:e2300186. doi: 10.1002/adbi.202300186. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMitochondria are required for energy production and even give brown adipose tissue (BAT) its characteristic color due to their high iron content and abundance. The physiological function and bioenergetic capacity of mitochondria are connected to the structure, folding, and organization of its inner-membrane cristae. During the aging process, mitochondrial dysfunction is observed, and the regulatory balance of mitochondrial dynamics is often disrupted, leading to increased mitochondrial fragmentation in aging cells. Therefore,...

Three-component deep eutectic solvent-based microextraction approach for biodiesel quality control: Determination of water and metals
Anal Chim Acta. 2023 Oct 9;1277:341658. doi: 10.1016/j.aca.2023.341658. Epub 2023 Jul 26.ABSTRACTBiodiesel is an important alternative fuel produced by blending biofuels with petroleum diesel. Biofuel production is usually carried out by catalytic interesterification of animal fats or vegetable oils, followed by the removal of by-products and catalysts through washing with water. Residual amounts of water and catalysts can accelerate fuel biodegradation and contribute to the corrosion of metal surfaces. Considering the need to control the quality of biodiesel fuel, a simple and environmentally friendly analytical approach ...
