Ketogenic dietary therapies for epilepsy and beyond.
Abstract PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The ketogenic diet, a high-fat, low-carbohydrate therapy, has become an established treatment for pediatric epilepsy since 1921. There has recently been an increase in important studies on the ketogenic diet, and this review will highlight the most recent in order to provide a synthesis of where this field stands today. RECENT FINDINGS: Clinical studies continue to support the use of ketogenic diets in epilepsy, with more recent trials supporting its use in adults. Clinical recommendations published in 2018 based on a decade of practice and research, guide implementation and manage...

Nutritional and dietary strategy in the clinical care of inflammatory bowel disease.
Abstract The incidence and prevalence of inflammatory bowel disease have been increasing for decades and IBD has become a worldwide disease. Epidemiology studies demonstrated higher incidence rates in the more westernized countries. The change of habitual diets in these countries is perceived as the reason for the development of IBD. Besides, molecular biological studies showed some pathogenic substances produced after digestion of daily diet decrease the diversity of intestinal microbiota and cause dysbiosis of microbiome. Then, chronic inflammation occurs in some genetically susceptible subjects and IBD develope...

Essential Contributions of Pathologists and Laboratory Physicians Leading to the Discovery of Insulin.
CONCLUSIONS.—: By 1921-1922, the pieces necessary to solve the puzzle were available. The primary reason that the time was ripe for the discovery was because of the contributions of pathologists and laboratory physicians in the preceding 3 decades. As the 100th anniversary approaches, our profession can take pride in its important contributions to the discovery of insulin, which is broadly recognized as one of the most important medical research advances of the 20th century. Pediatric Patients and Dietary Choices: Examining Alternative Options, Decision Making, and Misinformation.
This article will also explore where patients and families are likely to seek their information and assess their level of trust in the information. METHODS: Five alternative diets and two supplements were assessed through a literature review for their effect on pediatric patients with cancer. FINDINGS: Additional research is needed to prove consistent and definitive dietary benefits for pediatric patients with cancer; however, some diets have demonstrated promising results. A general diet for pediatric patients with cancer consists of an appropriate distribution of nutritious carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Ho...

Durable Clinical and Biochemical but Not Endoscopic Remission in Pediatric Crohn's Disease on Specific Carbohydrate Diet Monotherapy.
We report three pediatric CD patients who achieved clinical remission on SCD monotherapy, but failed to demonstrate complete mucosal healing with a minimum of one year follow up. This case report highlights that SCD monotherapy in male pediatric CD patients can sustain durable clinical and biochemical remission, but not full mucosal healing. New obesity treatment: Fasting, exercise and low carb diet - The NOT-FED study
CONCLUSION: This low-resource initiative was successful in assisting self-selected patients at a rural primary care clinic to achieve significant weight loss at 1-year. This approach is practical and is fertile ground for ongoing research.PMID:33818532 | DOI:10.4103/CJRM.CJRM_1_20
