Etiology of Acute Infectious Meningitis and Meningoencephalitis in Karachi, Pakistan: Retrospective Observational Study from a Tertiary Care Center
We report a broad range of pathogens causing ME in southern Pakistan and show a high burden of preventable illness. Synergistic actions to improve diagnostic strategies, increase vaccinations, and introduce measures to reduce water-borne and vector-borne diseases are required to reduce the ME burden in Pakistan and prevent future outbreaks.PMID:37460090 | DOI:10.4269/ajtmh.23-0182

A humanized monoclonal antibody targeting protein a promotes opsonophagocytosis of Staphylococcus aureus in human umbilical cord blood
Vaccine. 2023 Jul 15:S0264-410X(23)00830-7. doi: 10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.07.018. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLow and very-low-birth-weight (V/LBW) neonates are highly susceptible to bacterial sepsis and meningitis. Bacterial infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus can be particularly dangerous for neonates and can result in high mortality and long-term disabilities.Antibody-based strategies have been attempted to protect V/LBW neonates against staphylococcal disease. However, these efforts have so far been unsuccessful. Failures were attributed to the immaturity of the neonatal immune system but did not account for the...

Expert Review on Nonsurgical Management of Parapneumonic Effusion: Advances, Controversies, and New Directions
Semin Respir Crit Care Med. 2023 Aug;44(4):468-476. doi: 10.1055/s-0043-1769095. Epub 2023 Jul 10.ABSTRACTParapneumonic effusion and empyema are rising in incidence worldwide, particularly in association with comorbidities in an aging population. Also driving this change is the widespread uptake of pneumococcal vaccines, leading to the emergence of nonvaccine-type pneumococci and other bacteria. Early treatment with systemic antibiotics is essential but should be guided by local microbial guidelines and antimicrobial resistance patterns due to significant geographical variation. Thoracic ultrasound has emerged as a leading...

Surveillance of Neisseria meningitidis carriage four years after menACWY vaccine implementation in the Netherlands reveals decline in vaccine-type and rise in genogroup e circulation
Vaccine. 2023 Jul 7:S0264-410X(23)00781-8. doi: 10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.06.078. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCarriage of Neisseria meningitidisis an accepted endpoint in monitoring meningococcal vaccine effects. We applied molecular methods to assess the impact of menACWY vaccine implementation on meningococcal carriage and genogroup-specific prevalence in young adults in Fall of 2022, four years after the introduction of the tetravalent vaccine in the Netherlands. The overall carriage rate of genogroupable meningococci was not significantly different compared to a pre-menACWY cohort investigated in 2018 (20.8 % or 125 of ...
