Impact of Weight Gain on the Subsequent Survival of New Peritoneal Dialysis Patients
CONCLUSIONS: Weight gain is common during the first 2 years of PD, but weight gain does not appear to have any significant impact on the subsequent outcome. In contrast, weight loss >5% was significantly associated with worse patient survival subsequently.PMID:37497205 | PMC:PMC10368073 | DOI:10.1159/000529186

Unintentional weight loss in chronic kidney disease
Inn Med (Heidelb). 2023 May 23. doi: 10.1007/s00108-023-01527-9. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIf the causes of unintended weight loss are already diverse in pre-dialysis patients, at the stage of dialysis requirement a variety of other causes are added. Both stages share a trend towards loss of appetite and nausea, whereby uremic toxins certainly do not represent the only cause. In addition, both stages involve increased catabolism and therefore a higher calorie requirement. In the dialysis stage, protein loss (more in peritoneal dialysis than in hemodialysis) and the sometimes extensive dietary restrictions (low potassiu...

Ultrafiltration Rate Levels in Hemodialysis Patients Associated with Weight-Specific Mortality Risks
CONCLUSIONS: Ultrafiltration rates (ultrafiltration rates) associated with various levels of higher mortality risk depend on body weight, but not in a 1:1 ratio, and are different in men vs. women, in high-body weight elderly, and in high-vintage patients.PMID:36913263 | DOI:10.2215/CJN.0000000000000144

Diabetic kidney disease in type 2 diabetes: a consensus statement from the Swiss Societies of Diabetes and Nephrology
Swiss Med Wkly. 2023 Jan 6;153:40004. doi: 10.57187/smw.2023.40004.ABSTRACTDiabetic kidney disease is highly prevalent in patients with type 2 diabetes and is a major cause of end-stage renal disease in Switzerland. Patients with diabetic kidney disease are among the most complex patients in diabetes care. They require a multifactorial and multidisciplinary approach with the goal to slow the decline in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and cardiovascular morbidity. With this consensus we propose an evidence-based guidance to health care providers involved in the care of type 2 diabetic patients with diabetic kidney disease....

Oral delivery of chitosan-coated PLGA nanoemulsion loaded with artesunate alleviates ulcerative colitis in mice
In this study, polylactic acid-glycolic acid copolymer (PLGA) and chitosan (CS) double emulsification solvent volatilisation method was used to prepare a stable nanoemulsion loaded with ARS (CPA). The in vitro drug release profile was detected using dialysis and the potential protective effect was evaluated in an experimental ulcerative colitis (UC) model induced by oral administration of dextran sulphate sodium (DSS). The results suggested that the mean droplet diameter of CPA nanoemulsion is 409.9 ± 9.21 nm, the polydispersity index is 0.17 ± 0.01 and the zeta potential is 40.07 ± 1.65 mV. The cumulative release curve...
