A randomised controlled trial of integrated electrical stimulation and physiotherapy to improve mobility for people less than 6 months post stroke.
Conclusions: Integrating electrical stimulation and physiotherapy was feasible and improved walking speed. There was no evidence of a training effect compared with physiotherapy alone. One-hundred forty-four participants per group would produce an adequately powered study based on this protocol. Implications for Rehabilitation At the end of the intervention period participants using electrical stimulation to correct dropped foot walked faster. It was feasible for electrical stimulation to be combined with physiotherapy for people less than 6 months post stroke. A larger adequately powered study is required to establish whe...

Stroke rehabilitation: should physiotherapy intervention be provided at a primary health care centre or the patients' place of domicile?
Conclusion: Physiotherapy intervention at the primary health care centre and respective homes of stroke survivors similarly improved clinical outcomes. Treatment at any of these locations may enhance access to physiotherapy after stroke in a low-income community like Nigeria. Implications for Rehabilitation Physiotherapy protocol comprising 10-week task-specific battery of exercises produced significant improvement in walking speed, balance, motor function and community reintegration of stroke survivors. Physiotherapy post-stroke can be provided at either a primary health centre or the domicile of the individual. In a low-...

Eura Medicophys. 2007 Dec;43(4):525-41.ABSTRACTThe present literature review on functional assessment in physiotherapy was carried out for the following reasons: 1) to identify the functional instruments used in the field of physiotherapy that were supported by published evidence of their psychometric qualities; 2) to investigate how these instruments relate to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF); and 3) to investigate the use of functional instruments in the financing of physiotherapy. A search of Medline from 1990 to December 2005, in the domains of functional evaluation, psychome...
