The Association of Personal Neglect with Motor, Activities of Daily Living, and Participation Outcomes after Stroke: A Systematic Review
Arch Clin Neuropsychol. 2023 Aug 17:acad063. doi: 10.1093/arclin/acad063. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDespite its potential clinical impact, the association of personal neglect (PN) with motor, activities of daily living (ADL), and participation outcomes after stroke is not well-understood. This first-ever systematic review on the topic therefore evaluates this association, taking into account suggested subtypes of PN, including body representation neglect, somatosensory neglect, motor neglect, and premotor neglect. A systematic literature search was conducted on February 17, 2023 in PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, PubPs...

Improving Adherence to Medication in Stroke Survivors: A Pilot Randomised Controlled Trial.
CONCLUSIONS: A simple, brief intervention increased medication adherence in stroke survivors, over and above any effect of increased patient contact or mere measurement. ( http://controlled-trials.com , number ISRCTN38274953.). PMID: 23670112 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The Oxford Cognitive Screen (OCS): Validation of a stroke-specific short cognitive screening tool.
This article presents the normative data in a large sample of 140 neurologically healthy participants, a report on incidences of impairments in a sample of 208 acute stroke patients (within 3 weeks of stroke onset), measures of test–retest reliability on an alternate form and convergent and divergent validity. In addition, the full test materials are made freely available for clinical use. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2015 APA, all rights reserved)

Integrative executive function training in chronic stroke —A case example
Cognitive and functional impairments are common sequelae following stroke, often resulting in significant disabilities that persist years post‐stroke. While the degree of impairments varies with pathology and location of stroke, it is widely understood that executive dysfunction including disturbances of attention, complex information processing, inhibition, reasoning, and flexible thinking underlie a majority of the impairments. Existing rehabilitation approaches predominantly focus on mitigating targeted cognitive deficits (e.g., language disturbance, neglect of one side of the body, memory). Remediation approaches to ...

The association of hospital competition with inpatient costs of stroke: Evidence from China
Publication date: Available online 21 April 2019Source: Social Science & MedicineAuthor(s): Liyong Lu, Jay PanAbstractThe main purpose of this article is to analyze the association between hospital competition and stroke inpatient costs. Stroke is selected as the representative of a class of diseases characterized by asymmetric information and lack of autonomy of service choice. A total of 98,061 observations are selected from a medical record dataset in the Sichuan Province. The fixed radius approach of 15 miles and Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI) are employed to define the hospital market and measure the competition int...

Original Articles Low Socioeconomic Status and Psychological Distress as Synergistic Predictors of Mortality From Stroke and Coronary Heart Disease
Conclusions People in low socioeconomic circumstances are more vulnerable to the adverse effect of psychological distress. This pattern should be taken into account when evaluating the association between psychosocial variables and health outcomes.

Clinical Utility of the Neuropsychological Assessment Battery (NAB) after Unilateral Stroke.
Abstract The NAB is a comprehensive battery assessing five cognitive domains (Attention, Language, Memory, Spatial, Executive Function). Despite the advantage of co-normative domain data, its clinical utility is not well established because few studies have reported full-battery findings. The aim of this study was to determine if the NAB was sensitive to well documented hemispheric differences in language and spatial skills after unilateral stroke. We compared demographically matched control participants (n = 52) and individuals after left (LHD, n = 36) or right (RHD, n = 33) hemisphere damage due to stroke on the...

Distinct mechanisms and timing of language recovery after stroke.
Abstract The "language network" is remarkably stable across language tasks but changes in response to injury to specific components or in response to "disconnection" of input to one component. We investigated network changes during language recovery, hypothesizing that language recovery takes place through distinct mechanisms: (a) reperfusion; (b) recovery from diaschisis; (c) recovery from structural disconnection; and (d) "reorganization" of language, whereby various components assume function of a damaged component. We also tested the hypothesis that "reorganization" depends on: the language task, level of perf...

The Behavioural Outcomes of Anxiety scale (BOA): A preliminary validation in stroke survivors.
CONCLUSIONS: The carer BOA has acceptable psychometric properties and is independent of survivor demographic variables such as age. It identifies self-reported cases with acceptable sensitivity and specificity. It has potential for use with persons unable to self-report anxiety. Further validation is recommended, but its continuing use is supported. PMID: 24837000 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Improving medication adherence in stroke survivors: Mediators and moderators of treatment effects.
Conclusions: Addressing both automatic and reflective aspects of behavior via helping stroke survivors develop planned regular routines for medication-taking, and addressing any concerns or misconceptions about their medication, can improve adherence and thus potentially patient outcomes. Post-stroke fatigue is associated with impaired processing speed and memory functions in first-ever stroke patients
Fatigue is a common consequence of stroke that frequently co-occurs with depression. Data on the cognitive associations of post-stroke fatigue (PSF) is scarce. We investigated the relationship of PSF with depressive symptoms and cognitive functioning after stroke.
