The Effect of Race on Stroke Incidence and Post-Stroke Mortality - The Stroke Paradox in LVAD Patients
Stroke is considered one of the major hurdles in applying Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) technology to a broader population, and remains a leading cause of mortality and morbidity despite advances in both technology and management. In the general population, incidence of stroke in African Americans (AA) has been reported to be twice that of their Caucasian counterparts, and the mortality following stroke higher in AA. We sought to assess the effect of race on both rate of stroke, as well as post stroke survival in the LVAD population.

In-hospital stroke and mortality trends after left ventricular assist device implantation in the United States from 2017 to 2019
CONCLUSIONS: Our study found a significant downtrend in the in-hospital mortality rates among patients with LVAD without substantial changes in stroke rate trends over the study timeframe. As stroke rates remained steady, we hypothesize that improved management along with better control of blood pressure, could have played an important role in survival benefit over the study time frame.PMID:37387231 | DOI:10.1177/03913988231183723

ConclusionsThe risk of bleeding and thrombotic events during LVAD support differs by patient demographics, including sex, age, body mass index, and etiology of heart failure. Further studies should focus on the potential of tailored anticoagulation strategies in these subgroups.

FDA warns of high stroke, mortality risk with SynCardia TAH-t C2 controller
The FDA on Friday released a letter warning of a higher mortality risk and stroke rate than expected for patients receiving treatment from SynCardia Systems’ Temporary Total Artificial Heart Companion 2 Driver System. Data indicating the higher mortality and stroke rate came from a post-approval study conducted by the company itself, the FDA said.
