Renal dysfunction is associated with lower odds of home discharge for patients with stroke
CONCLUSION: The odds of home discharge for stroke patients decreased with a significant independent graded association with declining eGFR levels. Renal function could predict home discharge after stroke.PMID:34351833 | DOI:10.1080/00325481.2021.1964198

Warfarin Use and Risk of Stroke in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation Undergoing Hemodialysis: A Meta-Analysis
Abstract: In spite of the substantial burden of atrial fibrillation and associated elevated ischemic stroke risk in patients undergoing hemodialysis, the role of warfarin in these high-risk patients remains uncertain. Our objective was to clarify the association between warfarin use and risk of stroke for patients with atrial fibrillation undergoing dialysis. PubMed and Embase from January 1966 to January 2015 were searched to identify relevant studies. Inclusion criteria were cohort studies, patients with atrial fibrillation undergoing hemodialysis, and reported quantitative estimates of the multivariate adjusted relativ...

Reduced Stroke Risk After Parathyroidectomy in End-Stage Renal Disease: A 13-Year Population-Based Cohort Study
Abstract: Research information on the risk of stroke in patients with dialysis-dependent end-stage renal disease (ESRD) who have undergone parathyroidectomy (PTX) is scant. We used a nationwide health insurance claims database to select all patients with dialysis-dependent ESRD age 18 years and older for the study population. Of the patients with ESRD, we selected 1083 patients who had undergone PTX between 1998 and 2006 as the PTX group and frequency-matched 1083 patients with ESRD by sex, age, years since the disease diagnosis, and the year of undergoing PTX as the non-PTX group. We used a multivariate Cox proportional h...

Atrial Fibrillation had Less Impact on the Risk of Ischemic Stroke in Non-anticoagulated Patients Undergoing Hemodialysis: Insight from the RAKUEN study.
Conclusion A great impact on death, but not ischemic stroke, was observed in non-anticoagulated hemodialysis patients with AF in comparison to those without AF from the analysis of the RAKUEN study. PMID: 29607945 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Effectiveness and Safety of Warfarin in Dialysis Patients With Atrial Fibrillation: A Meta-Analysis of Observational Studies
The objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness and safety of warfarin use in patients with AF undergoing dialysis. Three databases PubMed, EMBASE, and OVID were searched from their inception to August 2015. Observational studies which assessed the ischemic stroke or bleeding risk of warfarin use in dialysis patients with AF were included. Two reviewers independently extracted data and assessed methodological quality based on the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale score. Combined hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using the random-effects model and heterogeneity was assessed based...

Efficacy and safety of direct oral anticoagulants vs vitamin K antagonists in patients with atrial fibrillation and end-stage renal disease on hemodialysis: A systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Among AF patients with ESRD on chronic hemodialysis, the risk of ischemic stroke, ischemic stroke or systemic embolism, minor bleeding, major bleeding, and all-cause mortality is similar in patients treated with DOACs compared to VKAs. Given that the meta-analysis of RCTs on gastrointestinal bleeding did not confirm the results of the meta-analysis of the observational studies, it cannot be concluded that gastrointestinal bleeding is lower among DOAC-treated patients.PROTOCOL REGISTRATION: PROSPERO CRD42023391966.PMID:37648582 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejim.2023.08.020

Long-term Clinical Outcomes of Elective Carotid Artery Stenting in Patients Undergoing Maintenance Hemodialysis.
Conclusion CAS in maintenance hemodialysis patients may be feasible and effective for the prevention of stroke with proper case selection, appropriate technique and strict perioperative management. The most common causes of death during the follow-up of maintenance hemodialysis patients were diseases other than stroke. PMID: 32062623 [PubMed - in process]

Effect of anticoagulation therapy in older patients with chronic kidney disease and atrial fibrillation: A meta-analysis
Conclusion: Compared with nonanticoagulation, anticoagulation therapy is associated with a reduced risk of death in older AF patients with nondialysis, but an increased risk of bleeding in older patients with dialysis.
