Impact of alcohol control policy on hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke mortality rates in Lithuania: An interrupted time series analysis
This study aimed to test the impact of three major Lithuanian alcohol control policies implemented in 2008, 2017 and 2018 on sex- and stroke subtype-specific mortality rates, among individuals 15+ years-old. Joinpoint regression analyses were performed for each sex- and stroke subtype-specific group to identify timepoints corresponding with significant changes in mortality rate trends. To estimate the impact of each policy, interrupted time series analyses using a generalized additive mixed model were performed on monthly sex- and stroke subtype-specific age-standardized mortality rates from January 2001-December 2018. Sig...

Fraction of stroke mortality attributable to alcohol consumption in Russia.
Abstract Stroke is an international health problem with high associated human and economic costs. The mortality rate from stroke in Russia is one of the highest in the world. Risk factors identification is therefore a high priority from the public health perspective. Epidemiological evidence suggests that binge drinking is an important determinant of high stroke mortality rate in Russia. The aim of the present study was to estimate the premature stroke mortality attributable to alcohol abuse in Russia on the basis of aggregate-level data of stroke mortality and alcohol consumption. Age-standardized sex-specific ma...

Risk of stroke in prescription and other amphetamine ‐type stimulants use: A systematic review
Conclusions. This is the first systematic review on ATS and stroke. Limited epidemiological evidence suggests that ATS use increases stroke risk. Possible disparities in ATS effect across stroke type and higher effect in women deserve further clarification. Studies on non‐medical ATS use should be a priority. Prenatal alcohol exposure exacerbates acute sensorimotor deficits and impedes long-term behavioral recovery resulting from adult-onset cerebrovascular ischemic stroke
CONCLUSIONS: Our data indicate that PAE contributes to adverse effects on brain health and to decreased resiliency to a common adult-onset neurovascular disease.PMID:36203340 | DOI:10.1111/acer.14952

Recreational drug misuse and stroke.
Authors: Yeung M, Bhalla A, Birns J Abstract Stroke is the third commonest cause of death and single largest cause of adult disability worldwide. Whilst the majority of strokes in older individuals are due to large or small vessel arterial disease or cardiac disease in association with classical vascular risk factors, strokes occurring in younger individuals may have atypical etiologies. Recreational substance misuse is on the increase worldwide, particularly in young adults in developed countries with commonly used substances including cocaine, amphetamines, heroin and other opiates, marijuana and gammahydroxybuty...

Prevalence and Associated Factors of Depression Among Post-Stroke Patients in Bangladesh
Abstract To assess the prevalence of depression and its associated factors among patients with stroke in Bangladesh. We conducted a cross-sectional study among 164 post-stroke patients attending two hospitals in Dhaka city between January and June 2011. Depression was measured using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale. Factors associated with depression were analyzed using multivariate logistic regression. Results: The prevalence of depression was 70 and 32 % had severe depression. The mean ± sd age of the participants was 58.91 ± 7.03 years.
