Serum sortilin as a predictor of stroke in patients with intermediate carotid artery stenosis
CONCLUSIONS: Serum sortilin level is increased in the presence of symptomatic intermediate CAS and may have clinical value in the management of patients with carotid artery disease.PMID:35403511 | DOI:10.1177/17085381211067051

Compliance and echographic carotid plaque evolution in patients with acute ischemic stroke treated with atorvastatin according to usual care.
In conclusion, an irregular compliance has been seen in patients with acute ischemic stroke treated with atorvastatin according to usual care. Nearly one-third of our patients stopped the treatment before the course of a year. The effect on lipids and its pleiotropic effect on atheromatous carotid artery disease might support the long-term use of atorvastatin, regardless of the dose, in patients with acute ischemic stroke. Safety of carotid endarterectomy following thrombolysis for acute ischemic stroke
Conclusions: Despite slightly higher rates of postoperative hemorrhagic strokes than those in randomized trials, CEA appears safe following thrombolysis for acute ischemic stroke. However, more data on the timing of surgery is needed.

Deep Vein Thrombosis After Total Hip Arthroplasty and Total Knee Arthroplasty in Patients With Previous Ischemic Stroke
The present study evaluated the prevalence and therapy of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) after total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in 57 patients with previous ischemic stroke. Postoperative anticoagulants were used for DVT prophylaxis, and batroxobin and prolonged anticoagulants were used for thrombolysis in DVT subjects. The incidence of DVT after THA and TKA in patients with previous ischemic stroke was 16.2% and 20%, respectively. No bleeding complications were observed and no new ischemic stroke occurred during the following 3 months. The prevalence DVT after THA and TKA in patients with previou...

Iatrogenesis imperfecta: stroke caused by accidental carotid artery catheterization.
CONCLUSION:: Even with ultrasound-guided central venous catheterization, it is essential to remain vigilant for the early detection of vascular complications. Clinical suspicion combined with diagnostic modalities such as chest radiograph, transduction and manometry can increase the detection rates. PMID: 25041919 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Management of stroke
Publication date: Available online 11 July 2015 Source:Surgery (Oxford) Author(s): Cátia Gradil , Manuel Cunha e Sá Stroke continues to be associated with high mortality and disability rates, posing a great burden on society. Recognition and modulation of stroke risk factors have allowed its management to evolve from rehabilitation to prevention. Maximizing the benefit of acute thrombolysis imposes a more efficient practice. Multiple studies have addressed the role of decompressive craniectomy, revascularization, recanalization, carotid stenosis treatment, haematoma evacuation, the role of intraventricular thrombolysis...

Metabolic Phenotypes of Carotid Atherosclerotic Plaques Relate to Stroke Risk: An Exploratory Study.
CONCLUSIONS: Discrimination between symptomatic and asymptomatic carotid plaque tissue is demonstrated for the first time using metabolic profiling technologies. Two biological pathways (eicosanoid and β-oxidation) were implicated in differentiating symptomatic from asymptomatic patients and will be further investigated. These results indicate that metabolic phenotyping should be further explored to investigate the chemistry of the unstable plaque, in the pursuit of candidate biomarkers for risk-stratification and targets for pharmacotherapeutic intervention. Protamine Reduces Bleeding Complications without Increasing the Risk of Stroke after Carotid Endarterectomy: A Meta-analysis.
CONCLUSION: On the basis of the available data, heparin reversal with protamine seems to reduce the risk of wound haematoma, without increasing the risk of procedural stroke. However, taking into account the limitations of the analysis, further studies are needed to increase the level of evidence provided by the current meta-analysis. Diastolic Blood Pressure is a Risk Factor for Peri-procedural Stroke Following Carotid Endarterectomy in Asymptomatic Patients
Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) prevents future stroke, but this benefit depends on detection and control of high peri-operative risk factors. In symptomatic patients, diastolic hypertension has been causally related to procedural stroke following CEA. The aim was to identify risk factors causing peri-procedural stroke in asymptomatic patients and to relate these to timing of surgery and mechanism of stroke.

Efficacy of Surgical Treatment on the Recurrent Stroke Prevention for Adult Patients With Hemorrhagic Moyamoya Disease
Conclusions: The current meta-analysis suggests that surgical treatment is better for conservative treatment in adult hemorrhagic MMD with recurrent stroke rate. Future studies are required to confirm this conclusion.

Stroke Outcomes In Sickle Cell Patients: From Children To Adults
One common and potentially devastating manifestation of sickle cell disease (SCD) that can occur in both a pediatric and adult population is stroke. Due to the high incidence of stroke in patients with SCD coupled with the severe, costly, and long-lasting effects, it is crucial to investigate this population. To date, there is no published data on stroke outcomes in pediatric and adult patients with SCD in Florida. The purpose of this study is to provide a modern look at the burden of stroke in this population.

Botulinum Toxin A and Task-Specific Training for Hand Dystonia due to 5 Year Old Stroke.
Abstract Focal hand dystonia after stroke, a result of maladaptive plasticity, impairs hand function, affects daily activities, and undermines independence. A 59-year male patient, who had developed focal hand dystonia after suffering from ischemic stroke 5 years ago, received training following an injection of Botulinum Toxin A (BoNTA). Task-specific training for a duration of 60 minutes per day for 3 days per week was provided for 12 weeks. Assessments were done by using arm dystonia disability scale, action research arm test, Fugl-Meyer assessment of upper extremity, and stroke-specific quality of life. Substan...

Hospital and Institutionalisation Care Costs after Limb and Visceral Ischaemia Benchmarked Against Stroke: Long-Term Results of a Population Based Cohort Study.
CONCLUSION: Long-term care costs after an ACLVI event are considerable, especially after critical limb ischaemia. Hospital care costs were significantly higher than for stroke over the long term, and were similar after inclusion of costs of institutionalisation. PMID: 29653901 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

High Operator and Hospital Volume Are Associated With a Decreased Risk of Death and Stroke After Carotid Revascularization: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
Conclusions: We found a decreased risk of procedural death and stroke after CEA and CAS for high operator and high hospital volume, indicating that aiming for a high volume may help to reduce procedural complications. Registration: This systematic review has been registered in the international prospective registry of systematic reviews (PROSPERO): CRD42017051491.

Contralateral Occlusion and Concomitant Procedures Drive Risk of Non-ipsilateral Stroke After Carotid Endarterectomy
Stroke after carotid endarterectomy (CEA) has been assessed widely. However, factors enhancing non-ipsilateral stroke risk are poorly defined. The aim of this study was to identify drivers of 30 day non-ipsilateral stroke after CEA in the Vascular Quality Initiative (VQI) and assess long-term survival based on laterality of post-operative stroke.
