A urokinase-associated outbreak of < em > Ralstonia mannitolilytica < /em > bloodstream infections in haemodialysis patients in north-eastern Italy, January to April 2023
Euro Surveill. 2023 Jul;28(28):2300328. doi: 10.2807/1560-7917.ES.2023.28.28.2300328.ABSTRACTAn outbreak of Ralstonia mannitolilytica bloodstream infections occurred in four hospitals in north-eastern Italy, involving 20 haemodialysis patients with tunnelled central vascular catheter access. We identified as the outbreak source a batch of urokinase vials imported from India contaminated with R. mannitolilytica. Whole genome sequences of the clinical and urokinase strains were highly related, and only urokinase-treated patients were reported with R. mannitolilytica infections (attack rate = 34%; 95% confidence interval: 22....

Associations of COVID-19 Outcomes with Dialysis Modalities and Settings
In conclusion, home dialysis was associated with lower risks of COVID-19 diagnosis, hospitalization, and death until vaccines were available, whereas care in skilled nursing facilities was associated with higher risks.PMID:36400565 | PMC:PMC9528267 | DOI:10.2215/CJN.03400322

Optimized infection control practices augment the robust protective effect of vaccination for ESRD patients during a hemodialysis facility SARS-CoV-2 outbreak
CONCLUSIONS: Prompt recognition of an infection cluster and rapid intervention efforts successfully ended the outbreak. Alongside consistent adherence to core infection prevention measures, vaccination was highly effective in reducing disease incidence and morbidity in this vulnerable population.PMID:35868457 | DOI:10.1016/j.ajic.2022.06.025

Quality of Life and Illness Acceptance among End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) Patients on Hemodialysis: The Moderating Effect of Death Anxiety during COVID-19 pandemic
This study will shed light on the need to provide appropriate psychosocial care as well as supportive therapies to people with end-stage renal disease who are experiencing mental distress during and after the COVID-19 outbreak.PMID:35254867 | DOI:10.1177/00302228221075202

Infection control measures to prevent outbreaks of COVID-19 in Quebec hemodialysis units: a cross-sectional survey
CMAJ Open. 2021 Dec 21;9(4):E1232-E1241. doi: 10.9778/cmajo.20210102. Print 2021 Oct-Dec.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Limited space and resources are potential obstacles to infection prevention and control (IPAC) measures in in-centre hemodialysis units. We aimed to assess IPAC measures implemented in Quebec's hemodialysis units during the spring of 2020, describe the characteristics of these units and document the cumulative infection rates during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic.METHODS: For this cross-sectional survey, we invited leaders from 54 hemodialysis units in Quebec to report information on the physical characteri...

Relative risk factors for seropositive hepatitis E virus among blood donors and haemodialysis patients: The pivotal role of primary health care education
CONCLUSION: The relative risk factors of the HEV seroprevalence were gender, age, locality and animal contact. Besides the need of a regular survey for the virus seroprevalence, primary health care physicians can play pivotal role in health education, especially in rural areas of Sudan. In addition, primary health care physicians in Sudan are expected to establish strategies and plans to eradicate and minimise the health impact of HEV.PMID:34568151 | PMC:PMC8415677 | DOI:10.4103/jfmpc.jfmpc_2441_20
