The impact of the implementation of a clinical decision support system on the quality of healthcare services in a primary care setting
DISCUSSION: The electronic health record with CDS led to significantly improved uptake of immunizations and screening tests, with earlier diagnoses of breast and colon cancer. Evidence of improvement in chronic disease outcomes is still lacking.PMID:33681044 | PMC:PMC7928113 | DOI:10.4103/jfmpc.jfmpc_1728_20

Severe Immune Suppression Discovered In Children Who Died From Influenza
Investigators from 15 children's medical centers, including Nationwide Children's Hospital, observed and evaluated critically ill children with influenza to evaluate the relationships between levels of systemic inflammation, immune function and likelihood to die from the illness. The study appears in the January issue of Critical Care Medicine. The innate immune system is the cellular arm of the immune system that serves as a first-responder to new threats, and is thought to drive the inflammatory response in many forms of critical illness...

Rapid testing to diagnose influenza leads to more appropriate care in the ED
(Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society) When patients in the emergency department are diagnosed with influenza by means of a rapid test, they get fewer unnecessary antibiotics, are prescribed antiviral medications more frequently, and have fewer additional lab tests compared to patients diagnosed with influenza without testing, according to a new study. Published online in the Journal of the Pediatrics Infectious Diseases Society, the findings suggest that diagnosing influenza with a rapid diagnostic test leads to more appropriate, specific, and efficient care.

Human rhinovirus C infections in pediatric hematology and oncology patients
Abstract Children with cancer and HSCT recipients are at high risk for common viral infections. We sought to define the viral etiology of ARI and identify risk factors. Nasal wash samples were collected from pediatric hematology–oncology patients and HSCT recipients with ARI during the 2003–2005 winter seasons. Real‐time RT‐PCR was performed to detect Flu A, influenza B, RSV, PIV 1‐3, human MPV, and HRV. HRV specimens were sequenced and genotyped. Seventy‐eight samples from 62 children were included. Viruses were detected in 31 of 78 samples (40%). HRV were detected most frequently, in 16 (52%) including five H...

Influenza vaccination: opinions of health care professionals working in pediatric emergency departments
ConclusionsInsufficient adherence to the influenza vaccination in physicians, nurses and other health care professionals is a concern for those assisting high-risk patients, especially in emergency departments. Therefore, it is vital to promote education of health care professionals and students regarding vaccinations. High vaccine coverage should be embedded in the safe hospital paradigm and should become a goal for the hospital's directors.

Care bundles for improving outcomes in patients with COVID-19  or related conditions in intensive care - a rapid scoping review.
CONCLUSIONS: This scoping review has identified 21 studies on care bundle use in critically ill patients in ICU with COVID-19, ARDS, viral influenza or pneumonia and severe respiratory failure. The data for patients with COVID-19 specifically are limited, derived mainly from observational quality improvement or clinical experiential accounts. Research is required, urgently, to further assess care bundle use and optimal components of these bundles in this patient cohort. The care bundles described were also varied, with guidance on ventilator settings described in 10 care bundles, while chest X-ray was part mentioned in one...

The Impact of Immunization and Use of Oseltamivir on Influenza-Related Hospitalizations: A Population-Based Study
CONCLUSIONS: We recommend oseltamivir be prescribed to patients when they first present with influenza-like symptoms to reduce the burden on the healthcare system. We also identified reduced odds of hospitalization associated with influenza vaccination, which is already well established, but particularly important this coming flu season.PMID:33829910 | DOI:10.1177/21501327211005906
