CO142 Evaluating the Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Acute Ischemic Stroke Outcomes in the Stroke Belt
This study sought to compare specific key outcomes related to ischemic stroke that occurred before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. We assessed mortality rates, morbidity rates, and the administration of thrombolytics in patients with ischemic stroke admitted to emergency departments (ED) in the Stroke Belt, a region of the United States with historically worse stroke outcomes.

PND48 Real World Data and COVID-19: Healthcare Impact in Emergency Care, Stroke Emergency Care and Stroke-Related Deaths in Chile
Stroke is a disabling condition and a leading cause of premature deaths in Chile. Before the covid-19 outbreak, access to first-line and second-line treatments was scarce already. The covid-19 outbreak was pointed-out as responsible for decreasing general emergency care, stroke emergency care, and stroke-related death rates, and there is a need to quantify those effects.

COVID-19 lockdown impact on quality of treatment and outcomes of STEMI and stroke patients in a large tertiary medical center: an observational study
ConclusionThe initial pandemic period caused a decline in HQIs linked to diagnostic and treatment protocols, without changes in outcomes, but with increased hospitalization costs. Medical information and awareness of life-threatening conditions among patients and caregivers should be increased to enable proper diagnosis and management.

Stroke rates among COVID-19 patients are low, but cases are more severe
(American Heart Association) The rate of strokes in COVID-19 patients appears relatively low, but a higher proportion of those strokes are presenting in younger people and are often more severe compared to strokes in people who do not have the novel coronavirus, while globally rates for stroke hospitalizations and treatments are significantly lower than for the first part of 2019, according to four separate research papers published this week in Stroke, a journal of the American Stroke Association, a division of the American Heart Association.

Stroke risk higher than expected among COVID-19 patients
(American Heart Association) Analysis of data from the American Heart Association's COVID-19 CVD Registry of more than 20,000 U.S. adults hospitalized with COVID-19 through November 2020 found that, overall, COVID-19 patients had an increased risk of stroke compared with patients who had influenza or sepsis.COVID-19 patients with ischemic stroke were more likely to be older, male, Black race or have high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes or an irregular heartbeat.
