Amlodipine downregulates gene expression that involved in the signaling pathways of coagulation process in COVID-19 patients: An observational clinical study
This study was carried out in the Department of Pharmacy at Al-Kut University College in Wasit, Iraq, in conjunction with Al Zahraa Hospital from June 2021 to March 2022. A total of 45 COVID-19 patients participated in this study who were grouped into as follows: Group I (n = 23) who had no previous history of hypertension and Group II (n = 22) who had previous hypertension and were treated with amlodipine. Expression of the calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR), coagulation factor V (F5), and methylenetetrahydrofolate dehydrogenase (NADP+ dependent) 1 Like (MTHFD1L) genes was determined. P values were calculated by Chi-square t...

Importance of screening severe COVID-19 patients for IFN- λ1, IL-6 and anti-S1 IgG levels
The objective of this study is to screen IFN-λ1, IL-6 and antibody levels in consecutive serum sample sets of COVID-19 patients. A total of 365 serum samples collected from 208 hospitalized COVID-19 patients were analyzed for IFN-λ1 and IL-6 levels as well as SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing antibodies and anti-S1 IgG antibodies. Analyses of serum samples for cytokine levels showed that IFN-λ1 (>8 pg/mL) and IL-6 (>2 pg/mL) were detected in approximately 64% and 21% patients, respectively. A decrement in IFN-λ1 levels and IL-6 levels above 35 pg/mL can be sign of clinical severity and upcoming dead. An increment in IL-6 l...

Validity of diagnoses of SARS-CoV-2 infection in Canadian administrative health data: a multiprovince, population-based cohort study
We describe the validity of diagnoses of SARS-CoV-2 infection recorded in hospital discharge abstracts, emergency department records and outpatient physician service claims from 3 Canadian provinces.METHODS: In this cohort study, population-based inpatient, emergency department and outpatient records were linked to SARS-CoV-2 polymerase chain reaction (PCR; reference standard) test results from British Columbia, Manitoba and Ontario for Apr. 1, 2020, to Mar. 31, 2021. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) of diagnoses of SARS-CoV-2 infection were estimated for each qu...

The Long-COVID autonomic syndrome in hospitalized patients: A one-year prospective cohort study
Eur J Intern Med. 2023 Aug 29:S0953-6205(23)00302-3. doi: 10.1016/j.ejim.2023.08.018. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLong-COVID syndrome is characterized by fatigue, orthostatic intolerance, tachycardia, pain, memory difficulties, and brain fog, which may be associated with autonomic nervous system abnormalities. We aimed to evaluate the short and long-term course of COVID-19 autonomic symptoms and quality of life (QoL) after SARS-CoV-2 infection through a one-year follow-up combined with validated questionnaires. Additionally, we aimed to identify patients with worsening autonomic symptoms at 6 and 12 months by dividing th...
