Improving diagnosis of pulmonary mucormycosis: leads from a contemporary national study of 114 cases
Chest. 2023 Jul 5:S0012-3692(23)00946-7. doi: 10.1016/j.chest.2023.06.039. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Pulmonary mucormycosis (PM) is a life-threatening invasive mold infection. Diagnosis of mucormycosis is challenging and often delayed, resulting in higher mortality.RESEARCH QUESTION: Are the disease presentation of PM and contribution of diagnosis tools influenced by the patient underlying condition?STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: All PM cases from six French teaching hospitals between 2008 and 2019 were retrospectively reviewed. Cases were defined according to updated EORTC/MSG criteria with the addition of diab...

This study explored the association between different cooking fuel types and the risk of cancer and all-cause mortality among seniors constructing Cox regression models. Data were obtained by linking waves of 6, 7, and 8 of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey, which included a total of 7,269 participants who were 65 years old and over. Cooking fuels were categorized as either biomass, fossil, or clean fuels. And the effects of switching cooking fuels on death risk were also investigated using Cox regression models. The results indicate that, compared with the users of clean fuels, individuals using bio...

Megakaryocytes in the lung: History and future perspectives
Res Pract Thromb Haemost. 2023 Jan 19;7(2):100053. doi: 10.1016/j.rpth.2023.100053. eCollection 2023 Feb.ABSTRACTA state of the art lecture titled "Megakaryocytes in the Lung" was presented at the London International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis congress in 2022. This lecture highlighted that although most medical teaching presents platelets as bone marrow megakaryocyte-derived cellular mediators of thrombosis, platelets are also a critical part of the immune system with direct roles in responses to sterile tissue injury and pathogens. Bone marrow megakaryocytes differentiate from hematopoietic stem cells and pac...

Measles, mumps and rubella vaccine 12 months after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation
The objectives of this study were to evaluate when patients received MMR vaccine after an HSCT in our care service and if there were reports of any side effects. We retrospectively reviewed the records of HSCT recipients who received at least one MMR dose in our care service, a quaternary teaching hospital in Sao Paulo city, Brazil, from 2017 to 2021. We identified 82 patients: 75.6% (90.1% in the autologous group and 45.1% in the allogeneic group) were vaccinated before 23 months post-transplantation. None reported side effects following the vaccination. Our data support that the MMR vaccination is safe from 12 to 23 mont...
