Chagas disease, cardioembolic ischemic stroke, INR control and bleeding
This report describes the history of this Brazilian engineer, also known as the King of Coffee, who achieved enormous business success and fortune in the late nineteenth century. In 1890, during the inspection of his farm, the world's largest coffee plantation at that time, he fell from a carriage, which left him a hemiplegic. This forced him to sell the farm and move to France for treatment. Before his death two years later, he gave his 18-year-old son bits of advice, and distributed his inheritance, which allowed Alberto to study in Paris and finance his experiments that would culminate in the development of the airplane...

Ischemic stroke and infectious diseases in low-income and middle-income countries
Purpose of review To address the important relationships between stroke and infection, focusing on the most frequent infections found in low-income and middle-income countries. Recent findings Stroke is one of the leading causes of mortality and disability worldwide, with a great proportion of the stroke burden occurring in low-income and middle-income countries. Infectious diseases are still a great health problem in developing countries and it is possible that the proportion of infection-related strokes is greater in these nations. Infectious diseases and stroke have a bidirectional relationship. Common infections m...

Mortality and Stroke Recurrence in a Rehabilitation Cohort of Patients with Cerebral Infarcts and Chagas Disease
Conclusions: Cardiac conditions did not correlate with mortality or recurrence. Age was a protective factor against recurrence, probably due to cumulative risk of IS over time, while initial mRS was associated with both outcomes. Treating diseases such as DM and bladder dysfunction, and early treatment to reduce the initial mRS could potentially prevent both outcomes; also, establishing a correct etiological diagnosis is important.Eur Neurol 2018;79:177 –184

Etiological Classification of Stroke in Patients with Chagas Disease Using TOAST, Causative Classification System TOAST, and ASCOD Phenotyping
Cardioembolism is considered a major pathophysiological mechanism in patients with ischemic stroke (IS) and Chagas disease (CD). However, a previous study reported that other stroke subtypes are present in more than 40% of CD patients according to the TOAST classification. Therefore, the aim of our study was to evaluate the etiologic classification of stroke in patients with CD using the Causative Classification System (CCS), the ASCOD, and the TOAST classifications in a prospective cohort of patients.

Ischemic stroke classification and risk of embolism in patients with Chagas disease
AbstractIschemic stroke (IS) and Chagas disease are strongly related. Nevertheless, little attention has been paid to this association and its natural history. The current guidelines concerning the management and secondary prevention of IS are largely based on the incomplete information or extrapolation of knowledge from other stroke etiologies. We performed a retrospective study which compared stroke etiologies among a cohort of hospitalized patients with IS and Chagas disease. The Instituto de Pesquisa Evandro Chagas/Funda ção Oswaldo Cruz (IPEC/FIOCRUZ) embolic score was also used to identify and evaluate the risk of ...

Analysis of Risk Factors for In-Hospital Stroke Mortality and Stroke Readmission in Hospital Risoleta Tolentino Neves (HRTN) - Belo Horizonte, Brazil (P1.213)
Conclusions: This study identified previous history of AF, cardiopathy and diabetes as risk-factors for increased stroke in-hospital mortality. We also identified that cardioembolic stroke, previous Chagas' disease and prosthetic heart valve increased the risk of readmission.Disclosure: Dr. Meira has nothing to disclose. Safety of IV thrombolysis in acute ischemic stroke related to Chagas disease
Conclusion: In the largest published series of patients with CD-related stroke treated with IV TPA, we have observed that IV thrombolysis was safely performed and showed no increase of SIH. The diagnosis of CD should not preclude IV thrombolysis in these patients.
