Case report of CT-guided lung biopsy complicated by air embolism
Undersea Hyperb Med. 2023 Third Quarter;50(3):273-281.ABSTRACTRATIONALE: Cerebral arterial air embolism is a rare but potentially fatal complication of computed tomography (CT) guided lung biopsy. Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) is the first line of treatment for arterial gas embolism and needs to be administered immediately after the event. Early HBO2 can reduce the mortality rate of cerebrovascular air embolism.PATIENT CONCERNS: A 65-year-old woman was diagnosed with a pulmonary nodule with a diameter of approximately 0.8 cm in the right lower lung. The patient developed consciousness, convulsions, and arrhythmia after CT-guide...

C. C. Li and Quasi-Random Mating
Twin Res Hum Genet. 2023 Sep 14:1-3. doi: 10.1017/thg.2023.37. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA simple model by which Hardy-Weinberg proportions are attained in a single generation while maintaining gene frequencies is stated and illustrated. The title 'Quasi-random mating' is proposed. Confusion about the Hardy-Weinberg principle can be avoided only if there is clear separation between the basic deterministic model and factors influencing a population's structure. Eighty years passed before C. C. Li coined the term 'pseudo-random mating'. The lesson taught by Li has not been taken on board.PMID:37706311 | DOI:10.1017/thg.2023.37

Finding Power in My Panic Attacks
Trouble started in the form of rivulets of sweat dampening the waistband of my underwear. It was a bluebird afternoon in Phoenix in December of 2020, mid 60s, desert dry, and my heart was jackhammering against my ribcage. Breathing felt like I was sucking air through a stir straw. A small ABC News crew was arrayed before me, ready to broadcast the report I’d written that day, but with my vision narrowed to a needle’s eye, I could barely see them. I tried to swallow away the sandiness in my mouth but realized I’d forgotten how. [time-brightcove not-tgx=”true”] “I can’t swallow!...

AI pitfalls and what not to do: Mitigating bias in AI
We describe these pitfalls by framing them in the larger AI lifecycle from problem definition, dataset selection and curation, model training and deployment emphasizing that bias exists across a spectrum and is a sequela of a combination of both human and machine factors.PMID:37698583 | DOI:10.1259/bjr.20230023

Are We Ready to Really Hear the Voices of Those Concerned? Lessons Learned from Listening to and Involving Children in Child and Family Psychology Research
Clin Child Fam Psychol Rev. 2023 Sep 12. doi: 10.1007/s10567-023-00453-4. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA changing view of children, accelerated by the Convention of the Rights of the Child (UN in Convention on the rights of the child, UN Doc. A/RES/44/25, 1989, http://www2.ohchr.org/english/law/pdf/crc.pdf ) has shifted the landscape of child and family research over the last few decades. Once viewed with low credibility and operating outside the interpretive framework of adult researchers, the rights-bearing child is increasingly recognized not only as having the capacity but also the right to participate in research. Mo...

Lessons Learned from 17 Years of Multidisciplinary Care for DSD Patients at A Single Indonesian Center
CONCLUSIONS: Our work has highlighted the occurrence of different DSDs in Indonesia. By applying sequencing technologies as part of our clinical care, we have delivered a number of genetic diagnoses and identified novel pathogenic variants in some genes, which may be clinically specific to Indonesia. Genetics can inform many aspects of DSD clinical management, and whilst many of our patients remain undiagnosed, we hope that future testing may provide answers for even more.PMID:37699373 | DOI:10.1159/000534085
