Fight Aging! Newsletter, August 28th 2023
In conclusion, we identified 20 genes with significant evolutionary signals unique to long-lived species, which provided new insight into the lifespan extension of mammals and might bring new strategies to extend human lifespan. « Back to Top Trials of Xenotransplantation of Pig Organs into Humans Continue https://www.fightaging.org/archives/2023/08/trials-of-xenotransplantation-of-pig-organs-into-humans-continue/ Researchers have genetically engineered pigs to overcome the known barriers to transplantation of pig organs into humans, and have reached the stage of conducting transplants in...

Improved prediction of drug-induced liver injury literature using natural language processing and machine learning methods
Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is an adverse hepatic drug reaction that can potentially lead to life-threatening liver failure. Previously published work in the scientific literature on DILI has provided valuable insights for the understanding of hepatotoxicity as well as drug development. However, the manual search of scientific literature in PubMed is laborious and time-consuming. Natural language processing (NLP) techniques along with artificial intelligence/machine learning approaches may allow for automatic processing in identifying DILI-related literature, but useful methods are yet to be demonstrated. To address t...

The use of simulation in liver transplantation anesthesiology fellowship training: A survey of fellowship program directors in the United States
CONCLUSIONS: Simulation is an important component of anesthesiology trainee education, as evidenced by the requirement for simulation during residency by the American Council for Graduate Medical Education. Our findings suggest that simulation is an underutilized educational tool that we believe could greatly augment the training of liver transplantation anesthesiology fellows by providing exposure to a wide range of clinical challenges.PMID:37398991 | DOI:10.1111/ctr.15055

A panel of seven protein tumour markers for effective and affordable multi-cancer early detection by artificial intelligence: a large-scale and multicentre case-control study
EClinicalMedicine. 2023 Jun 15;61:102041. doi: 10.1016/j.eclinm.2023.102041. eCollection 2023 Jul.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Early detection of cancer aims to reduce cancer deaths. Unfortunately, many established cancer screening technologies are not suitable for use in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) due to cost, complexity, and dependency on extensive medical infrastructure. We aimed to assess the performance and robustness of a protein assay (OncoSeek) for multi-cancer early detection (MCED) that is likely to be more practical in LMICs.METHODS: This observational study comprises a retrospective analysis on the data ge...

Segmentation algorithm can be used for detecting hepatic fibrosis in SD rat
CONCLUSIONS: We suggest it would be a more useful tool to apply segmentation algorithms in implementing AI algorithms to predict hepatic fibrosis in non-clinical studies.PMID:37381051 | DOI:10.1186/s42826-023-00167-2

ChatGPT Alternatives For Healthcare And Research
ChatGPT has made a name for itself in the world of AI, along with Bard and MedPaLM. Following the success of these first-generation language models, a host of alternatives, including the open-source project Spark NLP for Healthcare, have emerged. Our exploration today focuses on alternative solutions that, while underpinned by the principles of ChatGPT, have potential utility in the healthcare and research sectors. ChatGPT is remarkable, but it does have its drawbacks: a knowledge cut-off in November 2021, unilateral control and updates by OpenAI, an iOS-exclusive mobile app, and API-only integration, which can be quite...

Liver cancer risk quantification through an artificial neural network based on personal health data
CONCLUSION: Our results demonstrate a method that can predict liver cancer risk with basic health data and habits/lifestyles. This novel method could be beneficial to high-risk populations by enabling early detection.PMID:37211681 | DOI:10.1080/0284186X.2023.2213445
