Persistence of drug therapy is associated with ischemic stroke and other vascular events in high-risk stroke population
The high-risk stroke populations are significantly associated with an increased risk of stroke or other vascular events. Although proven primary and secondary stroke prevention medications are available, persistent use is required to be effective. However, the persistence of drug therapy and its association with outcomes in the high-risk stroke population have received limited study in China. Hence, according to the China National Stroke Screening Survey (CNSSS) program in 2015, we performed this multicenter population-based cross-sectional survey and prospective cohort study in Sichuan of southwestern China. The residents...

Acute ischemic stroke - from symptom recognition to thrombolysis.
CONCLUSIONS: As neuronal death in stroke patients occurs in a time-dependent fashion, all effort should be made to decrease time from symptom onset to treatment start with rtPA: major challenges are stroke recognition in the public, transport times to hospital and an efficient stroke triage in the hospital. Vascular Cognitive Disorders and Depression After First-Ever Stroke: The Fogarty-Mexico Stroke Cohort
Background and Purpose: Stroke is the major cause of vascular behavior and cognitive disorders worldwide. In developing countries, there is a dearth of information regarding the public health magnitude of stroke. The aim of the Fogarty-Mexico cohort was to assess the prevalence of vascular behavioral and cognitive disorders, ranging from mild vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) to vascular dementia (VaD), in a cohort of acute first-ever symptomatic stroke patients in Mexico. Methods: A total of 165 consecutive, first-ever stroke patients admitted to the National Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery in Mexico City, were ...

Stroke Suggests Increased Risk of Dementia.
Conclusions: The findings of this study suggest that stroke confers an increased risk of dementia, especially in the elderly and in patients with hemorrhagic stroke. We advocate the need for close observation and enhanced health education programs to benefit patients with stroke. PMID: 25731623 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Stroke Awareness In Outpatients. (P2.302)
CONCLUSIONS: General knowledge about CVRF is still insufficient in the outpatient population, even when assessed in the cardiology or neurology clinic. We believe that increased knowledge about stroke in outpatients, compared to inpatients, is due to higher educational level and a higher amount of family members with a history of stroke. Five year results of a stroke care network in Appalachia (P5.145)
CONCLUSIONS: The stroke network has successfully grown to influence stroke care and prevention across Kentucky and beyond. Next steps include implementation of the registry across the network, reporting of quality of care data across the network, and using the stroke care network as a model for other outreach programs at the university.Disclosure: Dr. Dobbs has nothing to disclose. Social deprivation and stroke severity on admission: a French cohort study in Burgundy and the West Indies – Guyana region
ConclusionsSocial deprivation was associated with a more severe clinical presentation in patients with stroke. These findings may contribute to the worse outcome after stroke in deprived patients, and underline the need for strategies to reduce social inequalities for stroke.

Hypertension is the most Risk Factor Stroke in Indonesia Stroke Registry (P3.263)
Conclusions:Hypertension was the most risk factor in this study. Riskesdas (Basic Health Research) survey 2013 found that 25.8% of Indonesia’s population suffered from hypertension. There were only 7.2% of the population realized and known they had hypertension and only 0.4% of cases controlled by drug.Indonesian Neurological Association collaboration with Indonesian Doctors Association educate people to be aware of their blood pressure, reduce salt intake, increase vegetables and fruits diet, reduce body weight, and increase exercise.Study Supported by:This research was funded by Centre of Applied Health Technology ...

Self-perceived psychological stress and risk of all-cause mortality after stroke: the Mashhad Stroke Incidence Study (MSIS) (P4.306)
Conclusions:High self-perceived pre-stroke stress was associated with a higher risk of all-cause mortality after stroke. Further prospective studies are required to evaluate the role of psychological stress as a predictor of stroke outcome.Disclosure: Dr. Saber has nothing to disclose. Rate and Determinants of Recurrence at 1 Year and 5 Years After Stroke in a Low-Income Population in Rural China
Recurrent stroke is becoming an increasingly important public health issue owing to the increased risk of disability and death. However, population-based studies investigating the rate of recurrent stroke in China are rare. We explored the rate and determinants of recurrent stroke within 1 and 5 years after the initial stroke in a rural population in China. Data for stroke events were obtained from the Tianjin Brain Study, conducted between 1992 and 2016. The age-standardized rates of recurrent stroke within the first year and the first 5 years after the initial stroke were calculated for this period. Determinants of recur...

Stroke Characteristics and Outcomes of Adult Patients in Northwest Ethiopia
Stroke is becoming one of the leading causes of adult disability and death in sub-Saharan African countries. The aim of the present study is to provide an up-to-date account of the clinical and demographic characteristics of patients with stroke admitted to the University of Gondar College of Medicine and Health Science Comprehensive Specialized Hospital (CMHS). A hospital based retrospective study design was used to analyze the medical records of all patients with stroke admitted to CMHS from June 20th 2012 and April 30th 2018. Post-stroke Cognitive Impairment —Impact of Follow-Up Time and Stroke Subtype on Severity and Cognitive Profile: The Nor-COAST Study
Conclusions: In this study including mainly minor strokes, PSCI is common for all subtypes, both early and long-term after stroke, while executive function and language improve over time. The findings might contribute to personalizing follow-up and offer new insights into underlying mechanisms. Further research is needed on underlying mechanisms, PSCI prevention and treatment, and relevance for rehabilitation.

One-year recurrence of stroke and death in Lebanese survivors of first-ever stroke: Time-to-Event analysis
ConclusionHigher rates of stroke recurrence and death were observed in the first year following a stroke in Lebanon. Various factors were identified as significant determinants. Thus, health care providers and officials in Lebanon can use these findings to implement effective preventive strategies to best address the management of these factors to reduce the stroke burden and improve the short and long-term prognosis of stroke survivors.

Assessment of Stroke Risk Factors in Southern Arizona (P02.054)
CONCLUSIONS: Despite a higher incidence of stroke, Hispanic concern regarding stroke risk factors is much lower than non-Hispanics. This suggests that knowledge linking risk factors for stroke and incident stroke may be lacking in Hispanic communities. Lessened concern regarding stroke risk factors may contribute to an increase incidence in stroke and to a worse outcome in this population. Hispanics increased interest in health promotion programs may afford one approach to addressing this problem. This data suggest that despite historically worse stroke outcomes, preventative efforts may be beneficial in raising stroke ris...
