Emergence of family medicine in ethiopia: an international collaborative education model.
Authors: Franey C, Evensen A, Bethune C, Zemenfes D Abstract Family Medicine (FM) is a new specialty in Ethiopia. The first seven family physicians graduated in February 2016 from the inaugural residency programme at Addis Ababa University. Cooperation amongst Ethiopian and expatriate decision-makers and physicians was needed to begin the programme. Intentional replacement of expatriates with Ethiopian family physicians has begun. Barriers include lack of understanding of FM and the human and financial resources needed for scaling up the programme. Regular programme review with resident physician involvement has al...

Why so much Critical Care in EM now?
Apologies if this has been covered in another thread, although my research yielded nada. Please excuse my youthful ignorance and naiveté. I am an MS4 applying to EM residencies and I wonder why there is so much emphasis on ICU months as EM residents. I think ICU experience would be very useful, but many of the places I'm applying to highlight the fact that they are ICU heavy. Many are excited about the prospect of adding even more ICU rotations. This worries me as I'm thinking I should be... Why so much Critical Care in EM now?

How to get into pulmonary and critical care fellowship
Hi everyone, I am one of the incoming residents in IM at a independent medical school which is attached to a community program (or its the other way around). I am an IMG on j1 and wanted to know on what should I focus during my residency so that I will be a good candidate for pulmonary and critical care fellowship? My program do have pulm/cc fellowship too. Any input would be highly appreciated. Thanks

Your experience during general surgery internship+residency, and/or trauma/critical care fellowship?
I'm only a high school sophomore so correct me if I am wrong please, but I believe that the three I have listed are the things you do right after graduating from medical school if you're planning to become a trauma surgeon. Even if you're not specifically going for becoming a trauma surgeon, these are still part of the path for other medical specialties I think so I just listed it separately. For the sake of helping people, I've been wanting to work in the ER. I found out that the type of... Application of high-fidelity simulation in critical care residency training as an effective learning, assessment, and prediction tool for clinical performance.
CONCLUSION: HFS is an effective training strategy, and can also be a complementary assessment tool to the written examinations and has better correlation with clinical performance. PMID: 30584004 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Should I even apply for fellowship ??
I graduate from a community (new medical school) program without in-house fellowship in 2018. I am an IMG on H1 visa. I am interested in Pulmonary and critical care fellowship. I only did posters during residency but have not published anything yet (working on two projects currently while working as a hospitalist). I passed CS only on my second attempt. My step 1 was high 250, ck high 260 and step 3 was 240. What are my chances for getting into fellowship? Will my CS-attempt filter my... Should I even apply for fellowship ??

How Competitive is it for EM Residents to get into a Critical Care Fellowship?
I'm an M4 matching into EM this year trying to get a better idea of how challenging it is to go into CC from EM. Will having high step 1/2 scores help me out? Does going to a strong academic residency matter much? There aren't really any published stats that I know of on chances/ stats of EM residents matching into CC fellowship so it's hard for me to guage just what my chances would be if I do decide to go the cc route. I've heard that it's competitive but I have no way of quantifying just... Read more

Factors Associated with a Career in Primary Care Medicine: Continuity Clinic Experience Matters
ConclusionsStrong interpersonal relationships with patients and clinic mentors were associated with a PC career. These factors may compensate for the reported frustrations of clinic. Enhancing patient and mentor relationships may increase the retention of PC residents in ambulatory careers and may help address the current and projected shortage of primary care physicians.

CC is the next EM
I'm pretty sure most people are aware now that EM is undergoing substantial issues w/ it's job market 2/2 to multiple factors including midlevels, residency proliferation, COVID, etc. I am here to put forward the prediction that critical care is next within 10 years. I want to be wrong, because my SO is gun-ho about CC and I have been trying to convince her to pursue something else. I want her to pursue her passion, but at the same time I don't want her to get burned. Is there anything I'm... Read more

The Association Between Family Medicine Appointment Cancellations and Hospital Utilization in 2019 and 2020
Conclusion: Between the 2019 and 2020 cohorts, appointment cancellations were not associated with significant differences in likelihood of admission, readmission, or length of stay. A higher risk of readmission was associated with patients with a recent family medicine appointment cancellation.

Effective Research Strategies for Trainees in Internal Medicine Residency Programs.
Authors: Sansone RA, Wiederman MW, Sawyer RJ Abstract For most training programs, the development of research endeavors among trainees is an ongoing challenge. In this article, we review various considerations when attempting to undertake research activities within an internal medicine residency training program, including availability of institutional resources (eg, dedicated research time for trainees and faculty, available faculty mentors, accessible adjunctive personnel), engagement of residents into research, classic project quagmires in training programs, the institutional review board, publication options (e...

Examining gender bias in the feedback shared with family medicine residents.
CONCLUSIONS: Residents would benefit from multiple opportunities for feedback from both male and female preceptors throughout their residency training. Faculty development to bring attention to potential gender bias may be useful to ensure equitable teaching and quality feedback for learners. PMID: 28812957 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

An Initiative Using Simulation to Aid in Retention of Advanced Cardiac Life Support Knowledge and Skills in an Emergency Department Nurse Residency Program.
The objective of this quality improvement project was to explore the retention of knowledge and skills of 20 graduate nurses who participated in a nurse residency program using an ACLS simulation-based learning experience (SBLE) at 2 and 8 weeks post completion of an ACLS provider course. METHODS: A pretest-posttest design was used with 2 emergency department graduate nurse cohorts who participated in an SBLE focused on ACLS components at 2 and 8 weeks after attending the ACLS provider course. Simulation-based learning experiences were videotaped, and outcome measures (ie, time to shock) were measured in seconds. The n...

New Graduate Nurses in the Intensive Care Setting
The COVID-19 pandemic and nursing shortage has impacted new graduate nurse (NGN) careers. Many NGNs gain initial employment with intensive care areas, encountering unprecedented stress due to high patient acuities, technology, and deaths. Having not yet transitioned into nursing practice, the NGN can experience a reality shock. Nurses are responsible for the care of the dying patient in the intensive care setting, despite inconsistencies in undergraduate curricula on death and dying. Nurse residency programs provide transition-to-practice support and reduce the stressors experienced by NGNs. Residency programs which specif...
