Validation of the 9-Point and 24-Point Hematoma Expansion Prediction Scores and Derivation of the PREDICT A/B Scores Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— The 9- and 24-point expansion scores demonstrate acceptable discrimination in an independent multicenter cohort; however, calibration was suboptimal for the 9-point score. The PREDICT A score showed improved discrimination for HE prediction but requires independent validation.

Potential new uses of non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants to treat and prevent stroke
Conclusion: There may be a role for NOACs in stroke prevention and treatment beyond atrial fibrillation. Randomized controlled trials are needed to compare NOACs to current stroke prevention and treatment strategies in certain subgroups of patients with cerebrovascular disease.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Intracranial Stenoses
Abstract Stroke is one of the most frequent and most significant vascular diseases. According to estimates, 16.9 million people suffered a stroke in 2010, and over one-third of the incidents were lethal. The risk of suffering a stroke due to intracranial stenosis is between 7 and 24 %. As opposed to extracranial stenoses of the internal carotid artery, there is no standardized treatment concept for intracranial stenoses. At present, treatment with a low daily dose of 100 mg aspirin is recommended by the guidelines for intracranial stenoses to additionally prevent dose-dependent gastrointestinal side effects an...

Efficacy and Safety of Edoxaban in Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation: A Meta-analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials
This study compared the efficacy and safety of edoxaban and warfarin in nonvalvular atrial fibrillation, and the effects of different edoxaban dosages. Methods: A systematic search for randomized controlled trials comparing edoxaban with warfarin in nonvalvular atrial fibrillation was conducted using PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library databases.

Do Patient Characteristics Explain the Differences in Outcome Between Medically Treated Patients in SAMMPRIS and WASID? Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— After adjustment for confounding baseline characteristics, WASID patients had an almost 2-fold higher risk of the SAMMPRIS primary end point, which supports the hypothesis that the lower rate of the primary end point in the medical arm of SAMMPRIS compared with WASID patients was as a result of the aggressive medical management used in SAMMPRIS. Antithrombotic therapy for ischaemic stroke patients with AF/RHD in West China daily practice.
CONCLUSION: Our study suggests that overall real-world use of warfarin in IS patients with AF and/or RHD is low before and after admission in West China. Implementation study on this respect should be conducted in this area to improve the daily practice. PMID: 26178783 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Protocol for Cerebral Microbleeds During the Non–Vitamin K Antagonist Oral Anticoagulants or Warfarin Therapy in Stroke Patients With Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation (CMB-NOW) Study: Multisite Pilot Trial
Anticoagulants are widely used to prevent recurrence of ischemic stroke in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation, but in some patients, they also cause bleeding, particularly intracranial hemorrhage. One of the independent predictors of intracerebral hemorrhage is the presence of cerebral microbleeds (CMBs); a high incidence of intracerebral hemorrhage is reported in warfarin-treated patients with multiple CMBs. Longitudinal study suggested that the presence of CMBs at baseline is a predictor of new CMBs in warfarin-treated patients.

Warfarin and Antiplatelet Medication Use Are Independently Associated with Poor Functional Outcomes Following Spontaneous Intracerebral Hemorrhage (P3.096)
Conclusion: Warfarin use is associated with a higher incidence of hydrocephalus, IVH and hematoma expansion, but lesser relative edema volume. While both warfarin and antiplatelet use are independently associated with worse functional outcomes, only warfarin use correlates with higher mortality.Disclosure: Dr. Murthy has nothing to disclose. Rates of Ischemic Stroke During Warfarin Treatment for Atrial Fibrillation Brief Reports
Conclusions— In a large cohort of older patients with atrial fibrillation, we observed the highest rate of ischemic stroke in the first 30 days after warfarin initiation. Although causation cannot be established given the observational nature of this study, our findings highlight the need for future research in this population.

Antithrombotic treatment at onset of stroke with atrial fibrillation, functional outcome, and fatality: a systematic review and meta‐analysis
ConclusionsTherapeutic International Normalized Ratio at stroke onset was associated with early and late improved survival and functional recovery suggesting sustained benefit for warfarin anticoagulation for stroke outcome in atrial fibrillation patients. Long‐term outcome data following stroke in patients taking new oral anticoagulants is required.

Prevalence of Pelvic Vein Pathology in Patients with Cryptogenic Stroke and Patent Foramen Ovale Undergoing MRV Pelvis
Conclusion: We demonstrate a relatively high prevalence of pelvic DVT among select CS patients emphasizing the importance of considering the pelvic veins as a potential source for emboli particularly in the presence of risk factors known to predispose DVT. Because patients were included at the treating physician's discretion, our results reflect ‘real-life' practice. Our results may be of clinical importance as inclusion of pelvic vein imaging in CS patients with PFO had impactful therapeutic and nosologic implications. Further study is needed to define patients most likely to benefit from pelvic vein imaging.Cerebrovasc Dis 2015;39:216-223
