Serotypes and antimicrobial resistance of < em > Streptococcus pneumoniae < /em > in children under 5 years of age pre- and post-pneumococcal conjugate vaccine introduction in Paraguay
Conclusion. A change in the circulating serotypes and antimicrobial resistance to certain antibiotics was observed. Non-vaccine serotype circulation and multidrug resistance may compromise the success of the conjugate vaccines.PMID:37289483 | DOI:10.1099/jmm.0.001700

Prevalence, capsular types, antimicrobial resistance and risk factors associated with pneumococcal carriage among children after long-term 10-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine use in Brazil
CONCLUSIONS: Long-term universal childhood use of PCV10 has nearly eliminated carriage with PCV10 serotypes, but the high frequency of MDR isolates, especially associated with serotype 6C/D, remains a concern. Replacing PCV10 with PCV13 should reduce the proportion of ERY-R isolates and PNSP by at least 14% and 18%, respectively.PMID:37061371 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.04.023

Microbiological and clinical characteristics of Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 3 infection and risk factors for severe outcome: A multicenter observational study
CONCLUSIONS: Serotype 3 infection showed a high mortality rate, especially in patients with older ages and comorbidities. Although the incidence rates decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic, serotype 3 remained as an important cause of infection after the implementation of PCV13. Developing a more effective vaccine against serotype 3 and monitoring the antimicrobial-resistant sequence types are necessary.PMID:36774315 | DOI:10.1016/j.jmii.2023.01.013

CME: Neuroborreliosis
Praxis (Bern 1994). 2022;111(14):779-787. doi: 10.1024/1661-8157/a003939.ABSTRACTCME: Neuroborreliosis Abstract. Lyme disease is the most common infectious disease transmitted by ticks throughout Europe. Bacteria of the Borrelia burgdorferi complex are transmitted via tick bites to humans. The typical initial presentation is a localized infection of the skin (Erythema migrans). If the patient is not treated with antibiotics, a disseminated infection might occur, presenting as neurological Lyme disease, Lyme carditis, Lyme arthritis or Acrodermatitis chronica atrophicans. A neuroborreliosis occurs in 3-15% of the cases. It ...
