Next generation 3D-printed intravaginal ring for prevention of HIV and unintended pregnancy
Biomaterials. 2023 Aug 3;301:122260. doi: 10.1016/j.biomaterials.2023.122260. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGlobally, there are 20 million adolescent girls and young women living with HIV who have limited access to long-acting, effective, women-controlled preventative methods. Additionally, although there are many contraceptive methods available, globally, half of all pregnancies remain unintended. Here we report the first 3D-printed multipurpose prevention technology (MPT) intravaginal ring (IVR) for HIV prevention and contraception. We utilized continuous liquid interface production (CLIP™) to fabricate MPT IVRs in a b...

Comparative studies on ovary and serum hormone levels in silver and blue foxes and their hybrids
Anim Reprod Sci. 2023 Aug 2;256:107316. doi: 10.1016/j.anireprosci.2023.107316. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe silver and blue fox appear closely related despite their belonging to different genera, and the male and female fox hybrids are completely sterile in mating inter se or back to either of the parental groups. In the present study, we compared ovarian morphology and serum hormone concentrations among silver foxes, blue foxes, HSBs (silver fox male × blue fox female hybrids) and HBSs (blue fox male × silver fox female hybrids) during the pre-breeding and the breeding period. We found that either the fertile blue...

Interaction of gonadal hormones, dopaminergic system, and epigenetic regulation in the generation of sex differences in substance use disorders: a systematic review
Front Neuroendocrinol. 2023 Aug 3:101085. doi: 10.1016/j.yfrne.2023.101085. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSubstance use disorder (SUD) is a chronic condition characterized by pathological drug-taking and seeking behaviors. remarkably different between males and females, suggesting that drug addiction is a sexually differentiated disorder. The neurobiological bases of sex differences in SUD include sex-specific reward system activation, influenced by interactions between gonadal hormone level changes, dopaminergic reward circuits, and epigenetic modifications of key reward system genes. This systematic review, adhering to P...

CETP expression ameliorates endothelial function in female mice through estrogen receptor- α and endothelial nitric oxide synthase pathway
Am J Physiol Heart Circ Physiol. 2023 Aug 4. doi: 10.1152/ajpheart.00365.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEndothelial dysfunction is an early manifestation of atherosclerosis. The cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) has been considered pro-atherogenic by reducing plasma HDL levels. However, CETP may exhibit cell- or tissue-specific effects. We have previously reported that male mice expressing the human CETP gene show impaired endothelium-mediated vascular relaxation associated with oxidative stress. Although sexual dimorphisms on the metabolic role of CETP has been proposed, possible sex differences in the vascul...

Retrospective study on long-term effects of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and iron chelation therapy on glucose homeostasis and insulin secretion in female ß- thalassemia major (β-TM) patients with acquired hypogonadotropic- hypogonadism (AHH)
CONCLUSION: Deterioration of glycemia (dysglycemia) occurred in 45.4% (5/11) of thalassemic females on long-term HRT. Additional studies are needed to elucidate the validity of our preliminary observations.PMID:37539597 | DOI:10.23750/abm.v94i4.14631
