Experiences of Indigenous Patients Receiving Dialysis: Systematic Review of Qualitative Studies
CONCLUSIONS: Indigenous patients receiving dialysis experience inequities in healthcare which compounds existing accessibility issues caused by colonization. Improving the accessibility and cultural responsiveness of dialysis and kidney transplant services in collaboration with Indigenous stakeholders holds promise to enhance the experience of Indigenous patients receiving dialysis.PMID:37730171 | DOI:10.1053/j.ajkd.2023.07.014

Machine learning to predict outcomes following endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm repair
CONCLUSIONS: In this data set, machine learning was able to predict 1-year mortality following EVAR using preoperative data and outperformed standard logistic regression models.PMID:37710397 | DOI:10.1093/bjs/znad287

Relationship between urinary potassium excretion, serum potassium levels, and cardiac injury in non-dialysis chronic kidney disease: KoreaN cohort study for Outcome in patients With Chronic Kidney Disease (KNOW-CKD)
Br J Nutr. 2023 Sep 11:1-21. doi: 10.1017/S0007114523002064. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAlthough the cardiovascular benefits of an increased urinary potassium excretion have been suggested, little is known about the potential cardiac association of urinary potassium excretion in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). In addition, whether the cardiac association of urinary potassium excretion was mediated by serum potassium levels has not been studied yet. We reviewed the data of 1,633 patients from a large-scale multicenter prospective Korean study (2011-2016). Spot urinary potassium to creatinine ratio was used as...

The impact of the early COVID-19 pandemic on healthcare system resource use and costs in two provinces in Canada: An interrupted time series analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Reduced utilization of healthcare services in the overall population outweighed utilization by COVID-19 patients in 2020. Meeting the needs of all patients across all services is essential to maintain resilient healthcare systems.PMID:37682823 | DOI:10.1371/journal.pone.0290646

Long-term outcomes of surgical aortic valve replacement in patients receiving chronic dialysis
CONCLUSION: Patients receiving dialysis have poor long-term survival with a very low rate of redo aortic valve surgery following SAVR with or without concomitant procedures. Older age (> 65 yr) is not an independent risk factor for either 30-day mortality or reduced long-term survival. Using alternative strategies to limit CPB pump time is an important way to reduce 30-day mortality.PMID:37402561 | PMC:PMC10322159 | DOI:10.1503/cjs.019121
