Identification of vulnerable carotid plaque with histologically validated CT-derived plaque maps
CONCLUSIONS: Carotid plaque components can be differentiated by CT using a ratio of plaque/contrast attenuation. CT-derived plaque map volumes of necrotic core help distinguished the most vulnerable plaques.ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE: CT-derived plaque maps based on plaque/contrast attenuation may provide new markers of carotid plaque vulnerability.PMID:37183910 | DOI:10.1259/bjr.20220982

When does life end? New organ donation strategy fuels debate
On a chilly holiday Monday in January 2020, a medical milestone passed largely unnoticed. In a New York City operating room, surgeons gently removed the heart from a 43-year-old man who had died and shuttled it steps away to a patient in desperate need of a new one. More than 3500 people in the United States receive a new heart each year. But this case was different—the first of its kind in the country. “It took us 6 months to prepare,” says Nader Moazami, surgical head of heart transplantation at New York University (NYU) Langone Health, where the operation took place. The run-up included oversight from an ethi...

Prediction of hemorrhagic transformation via pre-treatment CT radiomics in acute ischemic stroke patients receiving endovascular therapy
CONCLUSION: CT radiomics analysis is a valuable tool for predicting HT in AIS patients receiving EVT. It may guide the selection of patients in practice and improve procedural safety and effectiveness.ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE: Identification of the importance of pre-treatment CT radiomics in the prediction of HT in AIS patients after EVT.PMID:37086070 | DOI:10.1259/bjr.20220439

Cardiovascular imaging techniques for the assessment of coronary artery disease
Br J Hosp Med (Lond). 2022 Aug 2;83(8):1-11. doi: 10.12968/hmed.2022.0176. Epub 2022 Aug 19.ABSTRACTCoronary artery disease continues to be the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Recent clinical trials have not demonstrated any mortality benefit of percutaneous coronary intervention compared to medical management alone in the treatment of stable angina. While invasive coronary angiography remains the gold standard for diagnosing coronary artery disease, it comes with significant risks, including myocardial infarction, stroke and death. There have been significant advances in imaging techniques to diagnose ...
