Stroke risk in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy patients with atrial fibrillation: a nationwide database study.
This study aimed to determine the incidence of stroke and its risk factors in HCM patients with AF during a long-term follow-up. Using a national database, we retrospectively investigated 18,724 HCM patients from a systematic sample of 1,000,000 Taiwanese people between 1997 and 2013. The incidences of AF and stroke were estimated. Data were analyzed using Cox regression models. AF was identified in 598 patients (262 men, mean age 66.3±13.0 years) during a median follow-up of 7.0 years. The AF incidence in HCM patients was 5.83 per 1000 person-years, and the overall incidence of AF-associated stroke was 24.14 per 1000 per...

Characterization of familial hypercholesterolemia in Taiwanese ischemic stroke patients
Aging (Albany NY). 2021 Jul 27;13(undefined). doi: 10.18632/aging.203320. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFamilial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a common genetic disorder characterized by a lifelong elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) level. The relationship between FH and ischemic stroke is still controversial. We enrolled ischemic stroke patients prospectively in our neurological ward, and divided them into two groups according to LDL-C levels with a threshold of 130 mg/dl. Targeted sequencing was performed in all stroke patients for LDLR, APOB, and PCSK9 genes. The fifty-eight high-LDL subjects were older,...

Risk of peripheral artery disease and stroke in migraineurs with or without aura: a nationwide population-based cohort study
Conclusion: Migraineurs without established cardiovascular disease had a significantly increased risk of PAD and stroke, and the risk of stroke persists in migraineurs with or without aura, with an increased trend of PAD in migraineurs with aura. Our study result should remind clinical physicians of the risk of PAD in the future among migraineurs even without established cardiovascular disease currently, and screening for PAD and stroke may be needed in caring patients with migraine.PMID:35919822 | PMC:PMC9339415 | DOI:10.7150/ijms.72119

Clinical burden of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease.
Abstract There are no specific therapies for autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), and clinical data evaluating the effects of non-specific therapies on ADPKD patients are scarce. We therefore evaluated those effects using data from a longitudinal health insurance database collected from 2000-2010. We individually selected patients with and without ADPKD from inpatient data files as well as from the catastrophic illness registry in Taiwan based on 1:5 frequency matching for sex, age, and index year. The hazard ratios (HR) of all-cause mortality, ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke and end-stage ren...

Association of digoxin with mortality in patients with advanced chronic kidney disease: A population-based cohort study
In conclusion, our study demonstrated that digoxin use was associated with increased mortality, but not cardiovascular events or renal function decline in advanced CKD patients. This finding warns the safety of presc ribing digoxin in this population. Future prospective studies are needed to overcome the limitations of cohort study design.

Effectiveness and safety of rivaroxaban versus warfarin in Taiwanese patients with end-stage renal disease and nonvalvular atrial fibrillation: A real-world nationwide cohort study
ConclusionsIn Taiwanese patients with end-stage renal disease and nonvalvular atrial fibrillation, rivaroxaban may be associated with a similar risk of major bleeding but a lower risk of thromboembolism compared with warfarin. The potential benefit of 10 mg of rivaroxaban in this population requires further investigation.

ADVANCIS Score Predicts Acute Kidney Injury After Percutaneous Coronary Intervention for Acute Coronary Syndrome.
In conclusion, the ADVANCIS score is a novel, simple, robust tool for predicting the risk of incident AKI after PCI for ACS, and it can aid in risk stratification to monitor patient care. PMID: 29559842 [PubMed - in process]

Association between Coronary Artery Spasm and the risk of incident Diabetes: A Nationwide population-based Cohort Study
Conclusion: CAS is a risk factor for incident diabetes regardless of sex. However, females aged <50 years have a more apparent risk for CAS-related diabetes than old females, which is not observed in males. The median time of 2.9 years to incident diabetes warrants close follow-up.PMID:34104095 | PMC:PMC8176166 | DOI:10.7150/ijms.57987
