Stroke care programme in Aragon (PAIA): strategy and outcomes for the period 2009-2014
ConclusionsIntegrated process management and multidisciplinary teams distributed and deployed over an entire territory with established protocols, references, evaluations, and continuous development, have been proven powerful tools to ensure both quality and equality. The PAIA is a good example of clinical governance and networking due to its dynamic and sustained improvement and cooperation between clinicians.ResumenIntroducciónEn 2008, Aragón tenía tasas de morbimortalidad y discapacidad por ictus superiores a las del conjunto de España. Multi-ancestry GWAS reveals excitotoxicity associated with outcome after ischaemic stroke
AbstractDuring the first hours after stroke onset, neurological deficits can be highly unstable: some patients rapidly improve, while others deteriorate. This early neurological instability has a major impact on long-term outcome. Here, we aimed to determine the genetic architecture of early neurological instability measured by the difference between the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) within 6  h of stroke onset and NIHSS at 24 h.A total of 5876 individuals from seven countries (Spain, Finland, Poland, USA, Costa Rica, Mexico and Korea) were studied using a multi-ancestry meta-analyses. We found tha...

Commercial video games in the rehabilitation of patients with sub-acute stroke: a pilot study.
CONCLUSIONS: An interdisciplinary rehabilitation approach supplemented with semi-immersive virtual reality seems to be useful for improving balance and postural control, functional independence in basic activities of daily living, quality of life, as well as motivation and self-esteem, with excellent adherence. This intervention modality could be adopted as a therapeutic tool in neurological rehabilitation of stroke patients in subacute stage. PMID: 28990643 [PubMed - in process]

Pre-Existing Cerebral Small Vessel Disease Limits Early Recovery in Patients with Acute Lacunar Infarct
Background and Purpose: To assess whether neuroimaging markers of chronic cerebral small vessel disease (cSVDm) influence early recovery after acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Methods: Retrospective analysis of patients diagnosed with AIS and included in the Spanish Neurological Society Stroke Database. Inclusion criteria: (1) Brain MRI performed after acute stroke and (2) Premorbid modified Rankin scale (mRS)  = 0. Exclusion criteria: (1) Uncommon stroke etiologies, (2) AIS not confirmed on neuroimaging, or (3) Old territorial infarcts on neuroimaging.

Cross-cultural adaptation to Spanish of the Signs of Depression Scale (SODS) to the early assessment of mood in patients admitted to a Stroke Unit
CONCLUSION: The transcultural adaptation of the scale allows in a simple and early way the evaluation mood in patients admitted to the stroke unit. The Spanish version is equivalent to the original instrument. This adaptation can be incorporated into care in the Stroke Unit and is extrapolated to other Spanish-speaking centres.PMID:35275393 | DOI:10.33588/rn.7406.2021420
