Impact of the lipase inhibitor orlistat on the human gut microbiota
This study aimed to explore the effects of orlistat on the gut microbiota and fatty acid metabolism of Japanese individuals with obesity. Fourteen subjects with visceral fat obesity (waist circumference ≥85 cm) took orlistat orally at a dose of 60 mg, 3 times a day for 8 weeks. Body weight; waist circumference; visceral fat area; levels of short-chain fatty acids, gut microbiota, fatty acid metabolites in the feces, and gastrointestinal hormones; and adverse events were evaluated. Body weight, waist circumference, and blood leptin concentrations were significantly lower after orlistat treatment (mean ± standard deviatio...

The evaluation of photochemical behavior of antihistaminic drug triprolidine in an aqueous media
In this study, we sought to examine the photochemical behavior of triprolidine (TRP), which is a member of the first-generation antihistamine and utilized for a relief of an allergic conditions, in an aqueous media. There are no reports focused on its potential photoproducts and photodegradation pathways in detail to the best of our knowledge. TRP photodegradation induced by ultraviolet light (UV) irradiation was monitored utilizing high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and structural elucidation of the TRP photoproduct was performed by electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS/MS) and nuclear ma...

Clinical Study of Percutaneous Endoscopic Large-channel Fusion and Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion in the Treatment of Degenerative Lumbar Spinal Stenosis
CONCLUSIONS: Both percutaneous, endoscopic, large-channel fusion and TLIF had good therapeutic effects in the treatment of degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis. However, compared with the latter, the former was more effective, with better comprehensive efficacy and more obvious benefits for patients, so it's worthy of clinical promotion and use.PMID:37678853

Int J Syst Evol Microbiol. 2023 Sep;73(9). doi: 10.1099/ijsem.0.006073.ABSTRACTForty-eight Acidobacteriota strains were isolated from soils and sediments in Japan. Among them, six representative strains, designated W79T, W786T, Red222T, Red802T, Red803T, and Red804T, were subjected to the taxonomic classification. These six strains are Gram-stain-negative, non-spore-forming, rod-shaped, and facultative anaerobic bacterium that can reduce ferric iron. Phylogenetic and phylogenomic trees based on 16S rRNA genes and multiple single-copy gene sequences showed that strains Red222T, Red802T, Red803T, and Red804T formed a cluster...

Clinical and Sociodemographic Factors Associated With Health-Related Quality of Life in Patients With Adult Congenital Heart Disease - A Nationwide Cross-Sectional Multicenter Study
CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that HRQoL in ACHD patients is associated with various clinical and sociodemographic factors. Further studies are needed to clarify whether some of these factors could be targets for future intervention programs to improve HRQoL outcomes.PMID:37673658 | DOI:10.1253/circj.CJ-23-0383

Mixed-mode chromatographic performance using nicotinic acid-functionalized chito-oligosaccharide-bonded Ti/Si hybrid monolithic capillary columns
This article describes the fabrication of porous nicotinic acid-functionalized chito-oligosaccharide-bonded titania/silica hybrid monoliths (TiO2/SiO2@ChO-N) through a co-gelation sol-gel process. A capillary monolith with a well-defined and homogeneous structure was obtained by controlling the hydrolysis speed of titanium alkoxides in a sol mixture by using glycerol and acetylacetone. As a result of the functionalization with chito-oligosaccharides (ChO)-modified nicotinic acid, the obtained stationary phase provides superior physiochemical properties, such as a cationic hydrophilic surface, porosity, and mechanical stren...
