Prevention of Post-operative Delirium
This article provides an overview on non-pharmacological preventive measures, divided into individualized and non-individualized measures. Non-individualized measures, such as the most minimally invasive surgical procedure, avoidance of unnecessary fasting before surgery, and the most tolerable anaesthesia are used to minimize the risk of POD in all patients. Based on the results of preoperative screenings for risk factors such as frailty or cognitive impairment, individualized measures may encompass prehabilitation, treatment of specific risk factors, operation room companionship or cognitive, motor, and sensory stimulati...

The paracervical block: the method and its pioneer
Anaesthesiologie. 2023 Jul 21. doi: 10.1007/s00101-023-01309-w. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFrom the 1950s to the end of the 1980s the implementation of the so-called paracervical block (PCB) belonged to the therapeutic measures for pain relief. Due to its apparent simplicity and lack of potential risks the method was performed by the obstetricians themselves. The method is especially suitable for the painful opening period during the birth process. The procedure attained worldwide popularity up to the date when potential associated risks, namely for the fetus, became evident and is nowadays regarded as obsolete. The ori...

Morphological and morphometric study of the superior vestibular nerve trunk in guinea pigs
This study aimed to study the microscopic anatomy of the superior vestibular nerve (SVN) of guinea pigs using light microscopy and to search for normality patterns for use in experimental models in basic otologic research. We used eight male albino guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus, English strain), weighing between 400 and 500 g. After anesthetizing, the animals were perfused with a fixative solution of 2.5% glutaraldehyde. Dissection was performed by the access method to the temporal bone, coming to the rock and exposing the cochlea and vestibular nerve. The NVS fragments were removed, postfixed in osmium tetroxide, and embed...

Point-of-care lung and cardiac ultrasound (LUCAS) study in hip fracture patients: a prospective cohort study
CONCLUSION: This study found that LUCAS scans did not significantly alter the anesthetic plan for hip fracture patients. Nevertheless, LUCAS scans can rule out severe cardiopulmonary conditions and allow for both escalation and de-escalation of care. In the setting of early hip surgery, LUCAS presents a viable option in selected patients to address the unmet need to allow for both timely surgery and comprehensive patient evaluation.STUDY REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT03275129); registered 8 July 2018.PMID:37344745 | DOI:10.1007/s12630-023-02511-5
