Molecular and genetic characterization of bovine parainfluenza type 3 European field and vaccine strains
In this study, we sequenced the full-genome and genetically characterized BPIV-3 strains isolated from animals displaying respiratory illness in France and Sweden, as well as the vaccine strains contained in three different commercialized vaccines. Our results show that the sequences from France and Sweden belong to genotype C. However, a third sequence from Sweden from 2017 clustered within genotype A. The sequencing of vaccine strains revealed that two of the vaccine strains clustered within genotype C, whereas the third vaccine strain belonged to genotype A. Altogether, our findings suggest that both genotypes A and C c...

JMM Profile: Rift Valley fever: a zoonotic viral haemorrhagic disease
J Med Microbiol. 2022 Dec;72(12). doi: 10.1099/jmm.0.001619.ABSTRACTRift Valley fever (RVF) is caused by infection with Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV), a mosquito-borne RNA virus that affects both humans and livestock species. Humans can also acquire infection from contact with infected animals and contaminated bodily fluid. Veterinary vaccines are available for use in livestock, but no vaccines have been approved for humans to date. The virus is currently endemic in most sub-Saharan regions of Africa but numerous incursions into Middle Eastern countries and islands in the Indian Ocean, such as Mayotte (an overseas Departm...

Eleven science stories likely to make big news in 2023
As the COVID-19 pandemic enters its fourth year as a global health emergency, researchers will continue pushing to help make the disease manageable and ordinary. They will track hundreds of subvariants of Omicron, the highly transmissible but seemingly less lethal strain of SARSCoV-2 that dominated in 2022. Virologists will watch the virus’ evolution this year to see whether it has finally slowed or a more dangerous variant pops up, evading much of the immunity that humanity has built up to previous ones. Vaccine researchers hope to develop new shots that provide broad protection against a variety of coronaviruses.  Ano...

The Macro View – Health, Economics, and Politics and the Big Picture. What I Am Watching Here And Abroad.
The objective most consistent with recent operations is to conquer Luhansk, Donetsk, and Kherson, with a view to their eventual annexation and Russification. But not only are they some way from achieving that (w ith much of Donetsk still in Ukrainian hands and the Russia position in Kherson highly contested) it would also require an explicit Ukrainian surrender for it to serve as the basis for a declaration of victory. That will not be forthcoming.-----https://www.afr.com/world/europe/how-britain-giggled-its-way-into-crisis-20220710-p5b0giHow Britain giggled its way into crisisBoris Johnson has exposed the costs of Britain...
