Country of birth and mortality risk in hypertension with and without diabetes: the Swedish primary care cardiovascular database
Conclusion: In Sweden, hypertensive immigrants (with the exception for Finnish-born) with and without diabetes have a mortality advantage, as compared to Swedish-born.

Population trends in aortic valve surgery in Finland between 2001 and 2016.
Conclusions. The use of biologic aortic valve prosthesis has increased from 2001 to 2016. The proportion of women has declined markedly. The short-term mortality has decreased and the long-term mortality has stayed constant despite increasing comorbidity burden. PMID: 31650870 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Effectiveness of Only Aspirin or Clopidogrel Following Percutaneous Left Atrial Appendage Closure
Percutaneous left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) offers a feasible option for stroke prevention in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), but the optimal antithrombotic treatment strategy for patients with strict contraindications to oral anticoagulation (OAC) remains uncertain. We sought to evaluate short- and long-term outcome after percutaneous LAAC in these very patients discharged on single antiplatelet therapy (SAPT) alone. All consenting AF patients who underwent LAAC from February 2009 to August 2018 in Turku University Hospital, Finland, were enrolled into a prospectively maintained registry.

Lower Incidence of Late Tamponade After Cardiac Surgery by Extended Chest Tube Drainage.
CONCLUSIONS: Longer mediastinal chest tube drainage after cardiac surgery is associated with a significantly lower incidence of late cardiac tamponade. PMID: 30835565 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Poor Quality of Warfarin Treatment Increases the Risk of All Types of Intracranial Hemorrhage in Atrial Fibrillation.
CONCLUSIONS: Poor control of warfarin treatment was associated with elevated risk of ICH. Approximately half of the ICH were traumatic, mainly subdural. PMID: 30686804 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Regional differences in the incidence of diabetic cardiovascular events reflect the quality of care.
CONCLUSIONS: We found major and stable differences in the incidence of ACS and IS between the UHDs among patients with diabetes. The differences result from several factors influencing the risk of these complications, including the treatment. These differences tended to be larger than the corresponding differences in the total population, which suggests that there is potential to prevent CVCs by improving diabetes care. Age at death of major cardiovascular diseases in 13 cohorts. The seven countries study of cardiovascular diseases 45-year follow-up.
CONCLUSIONS: AD is a useful indicator of previous health and aging populations. STR and HDUE are diseases appearing later in life, thus being associated with a higher AD compared with CHD mortality. PMID: 29570017 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Usefulness of the CHA2DS2-VASc and HAS-BLED Scores in Predicting the Risk of Stroke Versus Intracranial Bleeding in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation (from the FibStroke Study)
CHA2DS2-VASc and HAS-BLED scores stratify the risk of thromboembolic and bleeding events respectively in patients with atrial fibrillation. There is only little information on how they differentiate which of the 2 clinically most important complications (ischemic stroke [IS] or an intracranial bleeding [IB]) the patient is more prone to suffer. We evaluated both scores in patients with either of these major complications. The FibStroke Study collected data on all patients with atrial fibrillation with either an IS or an IB event between 2003 and 2012 in 4 Finnish hospital districts.
