EE283 Health Economic Impact of Medication Non-Adherence to Direct Oral Anticoagulants in Austria
Medication non-adherence is a common and costly problem. EU-wide, non-adherence may lead to almost 200,000 deaths and excess cost of €80–125 billion. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most frequent cardiac arrhythmia, increasing the risk of stroke from three to fivefold and being a leading cause of cerebrovascular mortality and morbidity. Oral anticoagulant medication is recommended to reduce this risk, but medication non-adher ence leads to considerable health-risks and avoidable cost.

The Challenge of Preventing Carotid Artery Stroke in Properly Medically Managed Patients: Lessons From SPACE-2
The SPACE-2 trial led by Dr. Tilman Reiff(1) from Heidelberg University was a multi-center, randomized, controlled trial including 36 centers in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. It aimed to directly compare the benefit of intervention versus best medical therapy (BMT) in high-grade asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis patients. Interventions considered were carotid endarterectomy (CEA) and carotid artery stenting (CAS). Participants were between the ages of 50 and 85 years with at least 70% internal carotid artery stenosis.

Bioimpedance based determination of cardiac index does not show enough trueness for point of care use in patients with systolic heart failure
AbstractCardiac output (CO) is a key parameter in diagnostics and therapy of heart failure (HF). The thermodilution method (TD) as gold standard for CO determination is an invasive procedure with corresponding risks. As an alternative, thoracic bioimpedance (TBI) has gained popularity for CO estimation as it is non-invasive. However, systolic heart failure (HF) itself might worsen its validity. The present study validated TBI against TD.  In patients with and without systolic HF (LVEF ≤ 50% or>  50% and NT-pro-BNP <  125 pg/ml, respectively) right heart catheterization including TD was performed. TBI (Ta...

LM02 trial Perioperative treatment with panitumumab and FOLFIRI in patients with wild-type RAS, potentially resectable colorectal cancer liver metastases —a phase II study
ConclusionsPanitumumab and FOLFIRI as perioperative therapy for resectable CLM result in a radiological objective response rate in 65.7% of patients with a manageable grade 3 diarrhea rate of 14.3%. Median PFS was 13.2 months, and the 24-month OS rate was 73.3%. These data are insufficient to widen the indication of panitumumab from the unresectable setting to the setting of resectable CLM.

Should beetles be named after Adolf Hitler?
In 1934, a German paleontologist named a giant flying insect from the Carboniferous period Rochlingia hitleri , after Adolf Hitler, who had just taken power in Germany, and Hermann Röchling, an anti-semitic steel manufacturer and member of the Nazi Party. Three years later, an Austrian amateur entomologist named a brown, eyeless beetle from Slovenian caves Anophthalmus hitleri because he admired Hitler. In recent years, neo-Nazis have reportedly paid thousands for specimens, pushing the beetle toward extinction . Some researchers have argued for years that A. hitleri and other spec...
