Playing it safe: The relationship between parent attitudes to risk and injury, and Children's adventurous play and physical activity
CONCLUSIONS: We found a divergence between the outcomes parents desire for their children through engagement with risk and the play activities they are comfortable with in practice. Parent attitudes to risk and injury are potentially modifiable factors that may increase children's affordances for adventurous play and physical activity. Parent education interventions that provide practical approaches to address injury concerns and support children's risk-taking in play outdoors are recommended.PMID:37696315 | DOI:10.1016/j.psychsport.2023.102536

Case Report: Catastrophic Effects of Using Cannabis Via Bucket Bong in Top End Northern Territory of Australia
In this report, we describe three patients from remote and rural Northern Australian communities presenting with near-life-threatening events (acute pneumonitis and massive pneumothorax) immediately after the use of cannabis via bucket bong.PMID:37696516 | DOI:10.4269/ajtmh.23-0393

Best Practice in Telephone Bereavement Support: A Thematic Analysis of Bereavement Support Providers' Perspectives
Omega (Westport). 2023 Sep 11:302228231199876. doi: 10.1177/00302228231199876. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTelephone bereavement support is recommended in bereavement care policy and practice; however, little is known about what constitutes best practice. To explore how best practice in telephone bereavement support is conceptualized by those who provide the service, 26 healthcare professionals working in Australian hospitals, hospices, and other palliative care settings were interviewed. Thematic analysis was used to construct seven themes: A Valuable Service with Limited Resources, The First Call, The Dance of Rapport,...

Using within-person change in three large panel studies to estimate personality age trajectories
J Pers Soc Psychol. 2023 Sep 11. doi: 10.1037/pspp0000482. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHow does personality change when people get older? Numerous studies have investigated this question, overall supporting the idea of so-called personality maturation. However, heterogeneous findings have left open questions, such as whether maturation continues in old age and how large the effects are. We suggest that the heterogeneity is partly rooted in methodological issues. First, studies may have failed to recover age effects as they did not stringently separate within-person changes from confounding between-person differences. Sec...

Development and validation of a RT-qPCR for detection and quantitation of emerging epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus serotype 8 RNA from field samples
J Virol Methods. 2023 Sep 8:114808. doi: 10.1016/j.jviromet.2023.114808. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEpizootic hemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV) is a Culicoides-transmitted virus circulating in multiple serotypes. It has become a concern in the European Union as a novel strain of the serotype 8 (EHDV-8) of clear Northern African origin, has been recently discovered in symptomatic cattle in Italy (islands of Sardinia and Sicily), Spain, and Portugal. Current molecular typing methods targeting the S2 nucleotide sequences -coding for the outermost protein of the virion-VP2- are not able to detect the novel emerging EHDV-8 st...
