Development, manufacture and initial assessment of validity of a 3-dimensional-printed bowel anastomosis simulation training model
CONCLUSION: Experts found the 3D-printed bowel anastomosis simulator to be an appropriate tool for the education of surgical residents, based on the model's texture, appearance and ability to undergo an anastomosis. This model provides an affordable way for surgical residents to learn bowel anastomosis. Future research will focus on proving educational efficacy, effectiveness and transfer that can be adapted for laparoscopic anastomosis training, hand-sewing and stapling procedures.PMID:34580077 | DOI:10.1503/cjs.018719

Continuum of Surgical Skill Acquisition for the Postgraduate Residents During COVID Pandemic: Role of Advanced Simulators in a Multipronged Modular Approach
In this study, we have attempted to develop, implement, and evaluate the effectiveness of acquiring laparoscopic surgical skills using advanced simulators and with large live animal in a real-life situation by a modular training approach. This skill-based program was developed and implemented for final year General Surgery postgraduate residents of Yenepoya Medical College for training laparoscopic surgical competencies. The training was conducted at Advanced Simulation Centres of Yenepoya (Deemed to be University), Mangalore, Karnataka, India. Three training modules were prepared based on the competency-based medical educ...

Apple, condom, and cocaine – body stuffing in prison: a case report
ConclusionsThis case report illustrates that observation time needs to be adapted to each individual case of body stuffing. Proof of complete drug package evacuation ensures secure patient discharge. Body stuffers should be routinely asked for a detailed history, including how the drug is wrapped, and whether or not they ingested other substances to help expel the packets. The history enables the accurate interpretation of imaging. Repeated imaging can help follow the progress of packets if not all have been expelled during the observation period. Drug packets should be surgically removed in case of prolonged retention. To...

Stemming the Tide of Opioid Addiction-Dramatic Reductions in Postoperative Opioid Requirements Through Preoperative Education and a Standardized Analgesic Regimen.
CONCLUSIONS: Appropriate preoperative counseling and utilization of nonopioid analgesics can dramatically reduce opioid use while maintaining high patient satisfaction. Patient-reported data suggest that even greater reductions may be possible. PMID: 31621868 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Mp23-01 flow disruptions in robotic-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy: the impact of resident education
The evolution of medical technology has had several unanticipated effects as humans interact with mechanical systems. These ‘ironies of automation’ add complexity to the delivery of medical care and often offset the benefits, especially in the early period of learning. Flow disruptions are deviations in the progress of patient care that can compromise safety and indicate where systems are failing to deliver the best care. We applied the principles of human factors research to robotic prostatectomy in order to better understand the impact of operative urology resident education and improve the quality of patient care and safety.

Self-assessment in laparoscopic surgical skills training: Is it reliable?
ConclusionSelf-assessment using the CAT form gives results that are consistently not different from expert-assessment when assessing one ’s proficiency in surgical skills. Areas where there was less agreement could be explained by variations in the level of training and understanding of the assessment criteria.

The importance of endoscopic ultrasound fine-needle aspiration in the diagnosis of solid pseudopapillary tumor of the pancreas: two case reports
ConclusionsSolid pseudopapillary tumor is a rare pancreatic malignancy. Endoscopic ultrasound fine-needle aspiration is the gold standard method to characterize and diagnose this type of pancreatic lesion, making this an invaluable tool to help guide clinical management and improve the preoperative diagnostic yield.

Health-related quality of life (Nottingham Health Profile) in patients with endometriomas: correlation with clinical variables and self-reported limitations.
Conclusions: Since the stage of endometriosis does not correlate with subjective complaints, it seems that an additional routine evaluation of quality of life, including an assessment of the severity of the disease, is warranted. Routine use of the Nottingham Health Profile Questionnaire in patients with endometriosis can improve also the assessment of the treatment. PMID: 32399106 [PubMed]

Single incision laparoscopic TAPP with standard laparoscopic instruments and suturing of flaps: A continuing study
Conclusions: SITAPP for groin hernias, performed with conventional instruments is feasible, easy to learn, has a very high patient acceptance and is cosmetically superior to conventional TAPP. The use of tackers reduces the operating time significantly.
