Survey Says … The Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Graduate Medical Education
The COVID-19 global pandemic has had wide reaching international impact. At the time of this writing, 221 million cases and 4.5 million deaths have been recorded worldwide1. Healthcare systems across the world have had both direct and indirect impact; a symptomatic COVID-19 case has been estimated at $3,045 of direct medical costs during the course of infection2. Indirect impact on the medical profession; however, remains difficult to quantify. Graduate medical education trainees present a particularly vulnerable sub-population.

Participation of Canadian anesthesiology departments in undergraduate medical education
ConclusionThe contribution of anesthesiology departments to pre-clerkship has increased over the past fifteen years but remains much less than expected based on proportional faculty size. While the increase is encouraging, the relatively poor engagement is concerning, representing not only a missed opportunity but also a possible threat to the academic standing of the profession.

Entrustable professional activities : Promising concept in postgraduate medical education.
Abstract Entrustable professional activities (EPAs) are characterized as self-contained units of work in a given typical clinical context, which may be entrusted to a trainee for independent execution at a certain point of training. An example could be the intraoperative anesthesia management of an ASA 1 patient for an uncomplicated surgical intervention as an EPA in early postgraduate anesthesia training. The EPAs can be described as an evolution of a competency-based medical educational concept, applying the concept of the competencies of a person to specific workplace contexts. In this way the expected leve...

Attitudes towards and impact of letters of recommendation for anesthesiology residency applicants
Conclusion: LORs containing specific keywords play an important role in the application to anesthesiology residency, particularly when submitted by an anesthesiologist. While narrative LORs are still the preferred format, most of our respondents feel they need improvements. The authors suggest specific LOR improvements including creating formalized LOR training, adding a style guide, and applying comparative scales, with standardized vocabulary in the narrative LOR.PMID:33960915 | DOI:10.1080/10872981.2021.1924599

A systematic review of validity evidence for checklists versus global rating scales in simulation‐based assessment
ConclusionsChecklist inter‐rater reliability and trainee discrimination were more favourable than suggested in earlier work, but each task requires a separate checklist. Compared with the checklist, the GRS has higher average inter‐item and inter‐station reliability, can be used across multiple tasks, and may better capture nuanced elements of expertise.

Free Open-Access Medical Education in Emergency Medicine
Over the past 20 years the Internet has spawned a huge number of blogs, podcasts, videos and wikis on a countless number of topics and emergency medicine has been no exception.1 At the intersection of social media and critical care, the astoundingly popular Free Open-Access Medical Education (FOAM), or #FOAMed, movement has emerged as a force to be reckoned with.2 According to Symplur, which tracks healthcare-related hashtags, there were almost 900 million Twitter impressions containing the #FOAMed hashtag in 2014. (See Figure 1.) At the June 2015 Social Media and Critical Care Conference in Chicago, the "tribes"...

Validity of Simulation-Based Assessment for Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Milestone Achievement
This study analyzed whether SBMA scores (1) discriminate by postgraduate year, (2) improve over time, and (3) correlate with traditional measures of performance. Methods This is a retrospective analysis of 55 residents' SBMA data from 30 scenarios for two academic years. Each scenario was evaluated for time-in-training discrimination. Scenarios were then analyzed for SBMA scoring trends over time, and SBMA scores were compared with residents' clinical evaluations. Results Twenty-four SBMA scenarios discriminated by postgraduate year. Repeated measure analysis of variance showed statistically significant between-sessi...
