Approach to medical therapy in perianal Crohn's disease
This article will discuss key studies which can assist clinicians in addressing these matters when they are considering or have already commenced anti-TNF therapy for the treatment of perianal Crohn's disease. It will also discuss current evidence regarding the use of vedolizumab and ustekinumab in patients who are failing to achieve a response to anti-TNF therapy for perianal Crohn's disease. Lastly, new therapies such as local injection of mesenchymal stem cell therapy will be discussed.PMID:34321838 | PMC:PMC8291021 | DOI:10.3748/wjg.v27.i25.3693

Identification of Histological Threshold Concepts in Health Sciences Curricula: Students ’ Perception
In this study, students’ perceptions were used to identify histological threshold concepts (integrative, irreversible, transformative and troublesome) in three health sciences curricula. A specif ic questionnaire was developed and validated to characterize students’ perceptions of histological threshold concepts. A sample of 410 undergraduate students enrolled in the dentistry, medicine and pharmacy degree programs participated in the study. Concepts assessed in the study were clustered to ten categories (factors) by exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Concepts linked to tissue organization and tissue functio...

SCID and Other Inborn Errors of Immunity with Low TRECs — the Brazilian Experience
AbstractSevere combined immunodeficiency, SCID, is a pediatric emergency that represents the most critical group of inborn errors of immunity (IEI). Affected infants present with early onset life-threatening infections due to absent or non-functional T cells. Without early diagnosis and curative treatment, most die in early infancy. As most affected infants appear healthy at birth, newborn screening (NBS) is essential to identify and treat patients before the onset of symptoms. Here, we report 47 Brazilian patients investigated between 2009 and 2020 for SCID due to either a positive family history and/or clinical impressio...

MEdical Database AnaLysIS of Japanese multiple myeloma patienTs with apheresis #2 (MEDALIST-2): the impact of plerixafor use on costs and healthcare resources during mobilization and stem cell transplantation
Int J Hematol. 2022 May 13. doi: 10.1007/s12185-022-03356-2. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTreatment for multiple myeloma (MM) can involve apheresis to mobilize hematopoietic stem cells for later autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT), which can become costly over time. This retrospective claims database study examined healthcare resource use and medical costs associated with plerixafor, a selective CXCR4 inhibitor that mobilizes hematopoietic stem cells and minimizes apheresis times. Medical data were sampled from Japanese MM patients between April 2017 and September 2019, after the Japanese launch of plerixafor. The...

A review of current advancements for wound healing: Biomaterial applications and medical devices
J Biomed Mater Res B Appl Biomater. 2022 May 17. doi: 10.1002/jbm.b.35086. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWound healing is a complex process that is critical in restoring the skin's barrier function. This process can be interrupted by numerous diseases resulting in chronic wounds that represent a major medical burden. Such wounds fail to follow the stages of healing and are often complicated by a pro-inflammatory milieu attributed to increased proteinases, hypoxia, and bacterial accumulation. The comprehensive treatment of chronic wounds is still regarded as a significant unmet medical need due to the complex symptoms cause...

Undergraduate medical students' perceptions regarding stem cells: Is there a need for incorporating a stem cells elective course in the academic curriculum?
This study aims at evaluating the knowledge, awareness, and perception of medical students as far as stem cells applications are related in the medical field. A cross-sectional survey was carried out using online questionnaires, which were distributed via e-mail to cover all medical faculties in Jordan. The data show that medical students are supportive of using stem cells and their therapeutic applications, and most of them are willing and enthusiastically want to improve their knowledge about stem cells; however, due to the tight schedule and the lack of an elective course about stem cells in the curriculum, many of them...

What are Presentations of Neuroblastoma?
Discussion Abdominal pain is a very common problem with abdominal masses being somewhat less common. If one considers how frequently patients have abdominal pain due to constipation and that it often presents with a fecal mass, both of these are commonplace. Abdominal and pelvic organs are sometimes mistaken for masses also. As the abdominal and pelvic cavities are large, tumors often need to be quite large before they cause functional problems and/or can be palpated on physical examination. A review of abdominal masses can be found here. A review of recurrent abdominal pain can be found here. A review of acute abdominal p...

How Are Keloids Treated?
Discussion Wound healing is a complex process and abnormalities are common. Hypertrophic or keloid scarring are the two types of excessive scarring with both having excessive scar tissue that is elevated above the normal skin. Hypertrophic scarring occurs usually only within the wound and can regress. They are common after burns and develop within 3 months of skin injury. Keloid scarring spreads beyond the original wound and does not regress, and often recur. They can occur even 1 year after injury. Keloids have an incidence of 5-15%. “Compared to normal fibroblasts, keloidal fibroblasts have longer lives, higher pro...
