Supply Chain Shortages Threaten Medical Imaging Testing While Clinical Laboratories Face Scarcity of Blood Collection Specimen Tubes
From infant formula to contrast dye for CT scans, ongoing healthcare product shortages highlight continuing US supply chain and manufacturing issues Medical laboratory directors and pathologists have firsthand knowledge of COVID-19 pandemic-driven supply chain issues, having faced backlogs for everything from pipettes and transport media to personal protective equipment (PPE). But the latest shortage impacting […] The post Supply Chain Shortages Threaten Medical Imaging Testing While Clinical Laboratories Face Scarcity of Blood Collection Specimen Tubes appeared first on Dark Daily.

Stroke Mortality And Its Predictors In Nigeria: Results Of A Hospital-Based Study (P2.120)
Conclusion: The 30-day case fatality rate among our stroke patients is high while the independent predictors of this outcome are severity of stroke on admission and presence of complications. Continuing health education of the public on stroke recognition and the need for early hospital presentation is necessary while optimal management of cases in a stroke care unit is advocated in order to improve outcome.Disclosure: Dr. Wahab has nothing to disclose. Answers to Epilogue questions
Answers The chest radiograph shows volume loss in both lower lobes and right upper lobe. The right middle lobe is overinflated. There is mediastinal shift to the left. These findings were present on earlier radiographs, but their persistence was particularly significant. In view of the continuing oxygen requirement and the persistent changes on chest radiographs, a chest CT scan should be organised to evaluate further. In this baby’s case, congenital lobar overinflation (previously known as congenital lobar emphysema) of the right middle lobe was demonstrated (figure 2). The baby should be referred to the surgical te...

Adult gonococcal conjunctivitis: Prevalence, clinical features and complications
Conclusion. AGC is a rare disease which is difficult to diagnose as it requires a high index of suspicion to prevent corneal perforation but in an important number of cases it may mimic orbital cellulitis. It is crucial that treatment starts as soon as possible to avoid serious corneal damage. Patients should promptly receive complete and correct treatment when admitted to the emergency room since an elevated number of patients do not attend their medical follow-up visit. Azithromycin or aminoglycoside eye drops are probably the best option to complete the treatment, due to high quinolone resistance.PMID:34494952 | DOI:10.1099/jmm.0.001416

Three‐dimensional sinus imaging as an adjunct to two‐dimensional imaging to accelerate education and improve spatial orientation
ConclusionsThe impression of the learners was that a 3‐D educational module, highlighting key structures, is a highly effective tool to enhance the education of medical students and otolaryngology residents in sinus and skull base anatomy and its adjacent structures, specifically in conceptualizing the spatial orientation of these structures. Bridging the gap between basic and clinical sciences: A description of a radiological anatomy course
A wide variety of medical imaging techniques pervade modern medicine, and the changing portability and performance of tools like ultrasound imaging have brought these medical imaging techniques into the everyday practice of many specialties outside of radiology. However, proper interpretation of ultrasonographic and computed tomographic images requires the practitioner to not only hone certain technical skills, but to command an excellent knowledge of sectional anatomy and an understanding of the pathophysiology of the examined areas as well. Yet throughout many medical curricula there is often a large gap between traditio...

Abstract 219: Interdisciplinary Education and Relationship Building Improve Communication and Coordination in Stroke Care Session Title: Poster Session II
Conclusion: Through providing education to EMS providers and building relationships between EMS and hospitals, there has been a significant increase in pre-notification by EMS therefore improving timeliness of CT scans in acute stroke patients.

Association of White Matter Lesions, Cerebral Atrophy, Intracranial Extravascular Calcifications, and Ventricular-Communicating Hydrocephalus with Delirium Among Veterans.
CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that atrophy in the parietal lobes and the cerebellum of hospitalized older adult military veterans may be associated with an elevated risk of delirium when compared with age, race, and sex-matched control veterans. Continuing efforts are needed to clarify the role of atrophy during delirium in the veteran and nonveteran older adult population to reduce progressive frailty and decreased quality of life secondary to hospital and posthospital-discharge delirium. Lung Cancer Detection using Probabilistic Neural Network with modified Crow-Search Algorithm.
CONCLUSION: The
strategy for the selection of appropriate extracted features is employed to improve the efficiency of classification and
the work shows that the PNN with CCSA based feature selection gives an improved classification than without using
CCSA for feature selection. Intracranial and extracranial multiple arterial dissecting aneurysms in rheumatoid arthritis: A case report.
CONCLUSION: Considering that RA-induced vasculitis can be a potential risk of vascular complications including multiple arterial dissections, physicians should carefully perform endovascular interventional procedures for patients with long-term RA. PMID: 33076745 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

No Surprises: Training Robust Lung Nodule Detection for Low-Dose CT Scans by Augmenting With Adversarial Attacks
Detecting malignant pulmonary nodules at an early stage can allow medical interventions which may increase the survival rate of lung cancer patients. Using computer vision techniques to detect nodules can improve the sensitivity and the speed of interpreting chest CT for lung cancer screening. Many studies have used CNNs to detect nodule candidates. Though such approaches have been shown to outperform the conventional image processing based methods regarding the detection accuracy, CNNs are also known to be limited to generalize on under-represented samples in the training set and prone to imperceptible noise perturbations...

Virtual dissection of the real brain: integration of photographic 3D models into virtual reality and its effect on neurosurgical resident education
CONCLUSIONS: The authors introduced photographic 3D models to the virtual surgery platform for the first time. Integrating photographs with the 3D model and layering technique enhanced the educational effect of the 3D models. In the future, as computer technology advances, more realistic simulations will be possible.PMID:34333482 | DOI:10.3171/2021.5.FOCUS21193
