Effect of Sleep Hygiene Education on Sleep Quality in Patients With Liver Transplantation
This study aimed to determine the effects of sleep hygiene education on sleep quality in liver transplant patients. In the literature, the efficacy of various pharmacological methods for reducing poor sleep quality associated with liver transplant patients and studies on nonpharmacological methods are limited. This study was conducted using a quasiexperimental design with a pre- and posttest, and a control group. When the power analysis was made, a sample size with 5% double-sided significance, 95% confidence interval, and 95% ability to represent the population was calculated to have a total of 100 liver transplant patien...

Medical and Surgical Aspects of Intestinal Failure in the Child
Surg Clin North Am. 2022 Oct;102(5):861-872. doi: 10.1016/j.suc.2022.07.015. Epub 2022 Sep 13.ABSTRACTMedical and surgical care for children with intestinal failure has evolved so that long-term life expectancy is common even in the setting of the shortest bowel lengths. The long-term administration of parenteral nutrition has become safe with alterations in lipid formulation, and the risk of liver injury has been dramatically reduced. Well-established techniques for bowel lengthening and tapering exist to increase the absorptive capacity of the remnant bowel. These advances allow for ongoing intestinal rehabilitation in t...

Alcoholic Hepatitis: The Rising Epidemic
Med Clin North Am. 2023 May;107(3):533-554. doi: 10.1016/j.mcna.2022.12.005. Epub 2023 Feb 20.ABSTRACTAlcoholic hepatitis (AH) is a unique clinical syndrome on the spectrum of alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD). It constitutes a rising epidemic with increasing incidence and major public health implications. In severe AH, 30-day mortality approaches 30%, yet therapeutic options remain limited. Survival benefit from corticosteroids, the mainstay of medical treatment, is short-lived. Among corticosteroid nonresponders, the use of early liver transplantation is heterogeneous across centers and remains limited by significan...

Hip replacement deaths drop by a half since 2003
Conclusion This is an informative study which demonstrates a decline in 90-day mortality rates following total hip replacement in England and Wales between 2003 and 2011. The study benefits from using reliable datasets: the National Joint Registry for England and Wales is said to have recorded all total hip replacements performed since 2003; the Office for National Statistics records all deaths; and the Hospital Episode Statistics records data for all people who have received NHS-funded hospital care. The research has identified factors associated with decreased or increased 90-day mortality, although it is not possible to...

Artificial intelligence in medical imaging of the liver.
This article illustrates basic technical knowledge about AI, including traditional machine learning and deep learning algorithms, especially convolutional neural networks, and their clinical application in the medical imaging of liver diseases, such as detecting and evaluating focal liver lesions, facilitating treatment, and predicting liver treatment response. We conclude that machine-assisted medical services will be a promising solution for future liver medical care. Lastly, we discuss the challenges and future directions of clinical application of deep learning techniques. PMID: 30783371 [PubMed - in process]

Cytomegalovirus-Associated Hemophagocytic Syndrome Diagnosed by Liver Biopsy in a Kidney Transplant Recipient
Yonsei Med J. 2021 Mar;62(3):274-277. doi: 10.3349/ymj.2021.62.3.274.ABSTRACTHemophagocytic syndrome (HPS) is a rare but potentially life-threatening disease in kidney transplant recipients, and is caused by systemic proliferation of macrophages actively phagocytizing other blood cells in the bone marrow, lymph nodes, and the spleen. Here, we report a 40-year-old male kidney transplant recipient who presented with fever, bicytopenia, and elevated liver enzymes 2 months after transplantation. Given that cytomegalovirus antigenemia and real-time polymerase chain reaction tests were positive, liver biopsy was performed under ...
