PrEFiNe Plan: Strategic plan for Fabry diseases in Nephrology.
We present here the PrEFiNE project, which includes a wide spectrum of activities with the aim of improve knowledge and diagnosis of FD. The project is sponsored by Shire Iberia (http://shireiberica.com/) METHODS: From January 2016 to the end of 2017 several activities will be carried out, starting with a survey to evaluate current FD knowledge among nephrologists; in addition some studies to assess prevalence of this disease will be performed. One study will include patients receiving dialysis, another study will cover kidney transplant patients, and a pilot study in chronic kidney disease in stage 3-5 predialysis. Also p...

Effect of stage ‐based education provided by dedicated dietitians on hyperphosphataemic haemodialysis patients: results from the Nutrition Education for Management of Osteodystrophy randomised controlled trial
ConclusionsThe results of the present study suggest that the DD protocol decreases serum phosphorus compared to EP and THD, at the same time as maintaining the nutritional status of hyperphosphataemic haemodialysis patients. Assessing the cost‐effectiveness of the DD protocol is recommended.

Stimulating Patient Engagement in Medical Device Development  in Kidney Disease: A Report of a Kidney Health Initiative Workshop
Publication date: Available online 27 April 2017 Source:American Journal of Kidney Diseases Author(s): Frank P. Hurst, Dolph Chianchiano, Linda Upchurch, Benjamin R. Fisher, Jennifer E. Flythe, Celeste Castillo Lee, Terri Hill, Carolyn Y. Neuland New technologies challenge current dialysis treatment paradigms as devices become smaller, more portable, and increasingly used outside the dialysis clinic. It is unclear how patients will view this care transition, and it will be important to consider patient and care partner perspectives during all aspects of development for novel dialysis therapies, from design and clinical tr...

Impact of an in-Hospital Patient Education Program on Choice of Renal Replacement Modality in Unplanned Dialysis Initiation
Conclusions: A structured, patient-centered in-hospital education program increases the frequency of PD in patients needing unplanned RRT. PD modality choice is significantly higher in young (p #x3c; 0.0001) and male (p = 0.006) patients.Kidney Blood Press Res 2017;42:865 –876

End-stage renal disease treatment options education: What matters most to patients and families.
Abstract Treatment modality education can offer many important benefits to patients and their families. Evidence suggests such education can increase use of home dialysis, reduce catheter use, decrease 90-day mortality, and increase transplantation. While these benefits are encouraging, not all patients are offered options education and when they are, it may not be presented in a way that is immediately applicable to them and their lives. Furthermore, little is known regarding specific characteristics (e.g. format such as group or individual or in-person or online, duration, teaching methods, location, content) of...

Role of telehealth in renal replacement therapy education.
Abstract The prevalence of end-stage renal disease is rising in the United States, which bears high financial and public health burden. The most common modality of renal replacement therapy (RRT) in the United States is in-center hemodialysis. Many patients report lack of comprehensive and timely education about their treatment options, which may preclude them from participating in home-based dialysis therapies and kidney transplantation evaluation. While RRT education has traditionally been provided in-person, the rise of telehealth has afforded new opportunities to improve upon the status quo. For example, techn...

Progressive exhaustion: The experiences of Iranian family caregivers regarding patients undergoing hemodialysis. A qualitative study
Conclusion Family caregivers have a significant role in the process of patient care, and this role leads them to progressive exhaustion; therefore, the overall health of the caregivers should be taken into account and more attention should be paid to their quality of life, social welfare, and satisfaction level.

Home hemodialysis education during postdoctoral training: Challenges and innovations.
Abstract Inadequate education in home hemodialysis (HHD) fellowship training might contribute to underutilization of this modality in the United States. Most graduates of nephrology fellowships do not grade themselves as competent in HHD suggesting that fellowship training in HHD is inadequate. An essential component for fellow education is at least one faculty member with expertise in HHD who is passionate about promoting the use of this modality. At a minimum, fellow training should utilize a curriculum that includes both lectures about HHD and outpatient clinical exposure to this modality over a period of at le...

DASS21: A Useful Tool in the Psychological Profile Evaluation of Dialysis Patients.
CONCLUSIONS: Obesity, religion and coronary artery disease were significantly associated with all 3 symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress. Older age has a protective effect on anxiety and stress. Further study is needed to evaluate the relationship between these significant factors and each psychological state. Prediction of Hemodialysis Timing Based on LVW Feature Selection and Ensemble Learning
AbstractWe propose an improved model based on LVW embedded model feature extractor and ensemble learning for improving prediction accuracy of hemodialysis timing in this paper. Due to this drawback caused by feature extraction models, we adopt an enhanced LVW embedded model to search the feature subset by stochastic strategy, which can find the best feature combination that are most beneficial to learner performance. In the model application, we present an improved integrated learners for model fusion to reduce errors caused by overfitting problem of the single classifier. We run several state-of-the-art Q&A methods as...
