Herpes simplex virus, varicella-zoster virus and cytomegalovirus keratitis: Facts for the clinician
Ocul Surf. 2021 Jul 24:S1542-0124(21)00073-2. doi: 10.1016/j.jtos.2021.07.002. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTKeratitis due to Herpes simplex virus (HSK), Varicella-Zoster virus (VZK) and Cytomegalovirus remains a frequent source of concern for many ophthalmologists. They are a frequent cause of emergency consultations at eye care centers and carry the risk of permanent loss of visual acuity or visual quality and/or chronic neurotrophic keratitis, resulting in a significant decrease in the quality of life. HSK and VZK can affect the corneal epithelium, stroma, or endothelium or a combination of layers. In contrast, most cas...

Shingles vaccination uptake in Massachusetts adults aged 50 years and older
CONCLUSIONS: More than half of the sub-sample reported not knowing about shingles vaccine, therefore, opportunities to increase awareness should be prioritized. Since provider recommendation and flu vaccination receipt had the greatest odds of increasing shingles vaccination, standard practice should include adding shingles to flu vaccine recommendations for age-eligible patients.PMID:34625290 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2021.09.032

Comparison of rates of dementia among older adult recipients of two, one, or no vaccinations
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Receiving two types of vaccinations versus one type was associated with lower dementia risk. Vaccinations may have non-specific associations with incident dementia. Low cost and accessible, common adult vaccinations may be an overlooked intervention for reducing dementia risk.PMID:34897645 | DOI:10.1111/jgs.17606

Herpetic Keratitis Preceded by COVID-19 Vaccination
Vaccines (Basel). 2021 Nov 25;9(12):1394. doi: 10.3390/vaccines9121394.ABSTRACTThe global Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has accelerated vaccine development at an unprecedented rate. A large population of people have received COVID-19 vaccines, while the vaccine safety data are limited. Here, we reported two cases of herpetic keratitis that occurred soon after receiving the inactivated COVID-19 vaccines. Case 1 was a 60-year-old woman who underwent penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) one year ago for corneal scarring caused by herpes simplex keratitis (HSK), and case 2 was a 51-year-old man with an unremarkable me...

Impact of a structured older persons health assessment on herpes zoster vaccine uptake in Australian primary care
In conclusion, the structured older persons health assessment, which acts as both an incentive and a reminder for healthcare providers to recommend vaccinations in adults improves uptake of zoster vaccine in eligible adults. Such interventions may have a role in improving vaccine uptake among older adults.PMID:34973282 | DOI:10.1016/j.ypmed.2021.106946
