Perianal fistulas: A review with emphasis on preoperative imaging
CONCLUSIONS: Future well-designed prospective studies are needed to investigate the diagnostic accuracy of pelvic MRI and EAUS in the preoperative assessment of patients with perianal fistulas. Moreover, the combination of pelvic MRI and EAUS should also be studied, since several published articles suggest that it could lead to improved diagnostic accuracy. A novel treatment algorithm for perianal fistulas could arise from this study.PMID:35134600 | DOI:10.1016/j.advms.2022.01.002

Polyuria, Polydipsia and Possible Diabetes Insipidus?
Discussion The body is smart. It has mechanisms for maintaining balances within the body in a closely controlled manner but allows for a variety of states. This is very true for fluid balance in the body which is highly controlled between almost all of the major body organ systems. When fluid is low, the sensor sends signals for us to drink, and conserves fluid until we can. When the fluid is high, the kidneys excrete the excess and sends signals not to drink. Usually it works very well. While there are many pathological states that can cause polyuria and/or polydipsia, the most common reason is excessive fluid intake beca...

Enhancement of the Ivy Sign During an Ischemic Event in Moyamoya Disease: A Case Report
Intern Med. 2022 Jul 29. doi: 10.2169/internalmedicine.9326-22. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe herein report a case of increased and expanded ipsilateral ivy sign paralleling the expansion of cerebral infarction in a patient with moyamoya disease. A 67-year-old woman visited our hospital with symptoms of left hemiplegia, left homonymous hemianopia, and left unilateral spatial neglect. Magnetic resonance imaging of the head showed cerebral infarction in the right parietal lobe. In addition, ivy signs were evident on fluid-attenuated inversion recovery imaging. These findings were enhanced by the expansion of cerebral infa...

A practical guide for radiographers focussing on safety during magnetic resonance imaging
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) poses some risk when adequate safety measures are not adhered to. Despite efforts on MRI safety, incidents still occur in MRI. Extensive training on MRI safety is essential to protect patients, staff and the public from the risks associated with magnetic fields. Safety issues in MRI include projectile and torque effects on ferromagnetic objects, thermal effects, claustrophobia and adverse reactions to contrast agents. Radiographers operating MRI scanners play a vital role in ensuring that all who enter the MRI environment adhere to the safety measures.

Sensors, Vol. 22, Pages 8999: Deep Learning-Based Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD): Applications for Medical Image Datasets
This study employs deep learning methods in conjunction with meta-heuristic algorithms and supervised machine-learning algorithms to perform an accurate diagnosis. Pre-trained convolutional neural networks (CNNs) or auto-encoder are used for feature extraction, whereas feature selection is performed using an ant colony optimization (ACO) algorithm. Ant colony optimization helps to search for the best optimal features while reducing the amount of data. Lastly, diagnosis prediction (classification) is achieved using learnable classifiers. The novel framework for the extraction and selection of features is based on deep learn...

A case of undifferentiated carcinoma of the bladder treated by combination therapy of surgery, local radiation, and immune checkpoint inhibitors
We present the case of an 81-year-old woman complaining of bladder irritation. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a bulky bladder tumor, which was diagnosed as cT4aN0M0. A transurethral resection of the bladder tumor revealed pT2 or higher urothelial carcinoma. The patient underwent total cystectomy with an ileal conduit diversion. Histological examination revealed a primary undifferentiated bladder carcinoma with a sarcoma component, pT3aN0M0. Postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy with gemcitabine plus carboplatin was administered. However, this regimen was discontinued after one course d...
