Opinions of nephrologists on the efficacy and tolerance of statins in hemodialysis patients.
Authors: Budzisz E, Nowicki M Abstract Large randomized controlled trials have not confirmed the effects of statin therapy on reduction of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in end-stage kidney disease, despite that statins are still widely prescribed by nephrologists to chronic dialysis patients. The aim of the study was to analyze the attitudes of nephrologists towards statin use in hemodialysis patients. Self-designed questionnaire, containing 18 questions, was distributed among 115 nephrologists. The survey contained description of the results of 3 largest statin trials in nephrology. The questions referred...

Severe rhabdomyolysis secondary to adenovirus infection: case report and literature review.
Abstract A 38-year-old male presented with renal failure in the setting of a flu-like illness. Urinalysis showed myoglobinuria and granular casts. His serum creatine phosphokinase was markedly elevated. He was diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis and was volume resuscitated with normal saline and bicarbonate-containing fluid. Workup included a respiratory viral panel which was positive for adenovirus. Other causes such as trauma, seizure, and intoxicants were excluded. He developed progressive renal failure necessitating hemodialysis. After ~ 4 weeks he recovered renal function and dialysis was discontinued. Viral-induce...

Detection of Left Atrium Myopathy Using Two‐Dimensional Speckle Tracking Echocardiography in Patients with End‐Stage Renal Disease on Dialysis Therapy
ConclusionAssessment of LA deformation parameters predicts LV diastolic dysfunction and right ventricle systolic pressure in dialysis patients. Left atrium function in dialysis patients was impaired before the occurrence of left atrium dilatation.

Should statins be used to prevent cardiovascular disease in patients on hemodialysis?
Abstract There now exists current evidence that the initiation of statin therapy in patients on hemodialysis does not provide the same cardiovascular benefit as in non-hemodialysis patients. The KDIGO guidelines suggest not to initiate statin therapy in hemodialysis-dependent CKD patients, but to continue therapy in patients who are already on a statin at the time of hemodialysis initiation. A closer monitoring of myopathy is warranted for hemodialysis patients on a statin therapy. PMID: 25276990 [PubMed - in process]

Investigation of Factors Affecting the Six‐Minute Walk Test Results in Hemodialysis Patients
Abstract Renal anemia, uremic myopathy, and malnutrition are some of the factors that affect the results of the 6‐minute walk test (6MWT) in hemodialysis patients. We hypothesized that skeletal muscle dysfunction caused by skeletal myolysis, protein hypercatabolism, and mitochondrial deficiency are strongly related factors. The purpose of this study was to clarify the factors that affect the 6MWT results in hemodialysis patients to assess their exercise tolerance. The study included 43 outpatients from the hemodialysis unit. The 6MWT was performed, and knee extension strength, 1‐leg standing time, and grip were measure...
