Long Term Outcomes of Nasoseptal Perforation Repair With an Anterior Ethmoidal Artery Flap
CONCLUSION: The anterior ethmoidal artery flap is a reliable and minimal invasive technique for closure of symptomatic perforations. For defects larger than 2 cm, a lower success rate and additional reconstructive measures should be considered. Objective questionnaires are needed in order to evaluate functional outcomes.PMID:33878936 | DOI:10.1177/19458924211012120

The Effectiveness and Safety of Intrathecal Fluorescein in the Management of Cerebrospinal Fluid Leaks
CONCLUSION: Many studies have demonstrated IF to be safe at low doses (<50mg) with a high sensitivity, specificity and positive predicative value. Our results demonstrate that the use of IF in our centre is safe and effective at identifying CSF fistulae. While we have reported some complications in our cohort, these were unlikely to be directly attributable IF use. We have described no serious complications such as seizures, limb weakness or death. We believe this study adds to the growing body of evidence that IF use in the management CSF fistula repairs is safe and effective.PMID:34074164 | DOI:10.1177/19458924211020564

Periostin in Allergy and Inflammation
Matricellular proteins are involved in the crosstalk between cells and their environment and thus play an important role in allergic and inflammatory reactions. Periostin, a matricellular protein, has several documented and multi-faceted roles in health and disease. It is differentially expressed, usually upregulated, in allergic conditions, a variety of inflammatory diseases as well as in cancer and contributes to the development and progression of these diseases. Periostin has also been shown to influence tissue remodelling, fibrosis, regeneration and repair. In allergic reactions periostin is involved in type 2 immunity...

The Underestimated Role of Mast Cells in the Pathogenesis of Rhinopathies
Mast cells (MCs) are involved in several biological processes, such as defense against pathogens, immunomodulation, tissue repair after injury, and angiogenesis. MCs have been shown to change from protective immune cells to potent pro-inflammatory cells, influencing the progression of many pathological conditions, including autoimmune diseases and cancers. The role of MCs in the pathogenesis of rhinopathies has often been underestimated, since previous studies have focused their attention on eosinophils and neutrophils, while MCs were considered involved exclusively in allergic rhinitis. However, recent nasal cytology find...

Long-Term Outcomes of Nasoseptal Perforation Repair Using Anterior Maxillary Sinus Wall as an Interpositional Graft
CONCLUSION: Anterior maxillary sinus wall as interpositional graft between mucoperichondrial flaps can be used to reliably repair nasoseptal perforations.PMID:34636626 | DOI:10.1177/19458924211049608

M058 gelatin allergy implicated in intraoperative anaphylaxis following use of gelatin-based hemostatic agent
Intraoperative anaphylactic reactions are rare, with an estimated incidence of 1:4,000 to 1:25,000 (2). A limited, but slowly growing body of data citing anaphylactic reactions to gelatin-containing hemostatic agents have been reported, most commonly during scoliosis repair in adolescents (1)(2). Provided the potentially fatal, often unanticipated, and avoidable nature of this reaction, further insight into this rare but serious reaction is warranted.

Optimizing Emollient Therapy for Skin Barrier Repair in Atopic Dermatitis
CONCLUSION: We provide guidelines for the appropriate dispensation of moisturizers and physiologic lipid-based, barrier repair therapy for the treatment of AD. Both OTC (AtopalmÃ’) and Rx (EpiCeramÃ’) products are available in the USA with these characteristics.PMID:35065300 | DOI:10.1016/j.anai.2022.01.012

Endoscopic Endonasal Repair of the Orbital Medial Wall Fracture Utilising Nasal Septal Cartilage as the Reconstructive Material
CONCLUSION: This technique enables to repair most cases of orbital medial wall fractures using the endoscopic endonasal approach alone without alloplastic implants.PMID:35257597 | DOI:10.1177/19458924221086181
