Severe bronchiectasis in a patient with common variable immunodeficiency.
DISCUSSION: This case report stresses the importance of regular microbiological screening and appropriate antibiotherapy. Early/aggressive treatment may significantly impact on patients' evolution. PMID: 25951148 [PubMed - in process]

The Prevalence of Toxocariasis and Diagnostic Value of Serologic Tests in Asymptomatic Korean Adults.
CONCLUSIONS: The study indicated that the Toxocara-seropositive rate obtained by using the current cutoff value based on ELISA was high in the asymptomatic population in Korea. The results of this study suggest that active toxocariasis may be more frequently seen in the Toxocara-strong positive group than in the Toxocara-weak positive group. PMID: 26122506 [PubMed]

Efficacy of preoperative itraconazole in allergic fungal rhinosinusitis.
CONCLUSION: We found improvements in clinical, radiologic, and endoscopic parameters in AFS after preoperative itraconazole administration, which decreased the disease load significantly and also reduced the extent of surgery in the short-term follow-up. It may prove to be a good preoperative adjunct that needs further research. PMID: 26163250 [PubMed - in process]

Impact of endoscopic sinus surgery on olfaction and use of alternative components in odor threshold measurement.
CONCLUSION: Significant improvement was observed in olfaction after FESS, both in patient responses and in objective testing. The olfactory results with peppermint, lemon, clove, and ethyl acetate were close to those with butanol-1, and, hence, these other odorants can be used in place of butanol-1 in measuring the odor threshold. Tension-relaxing method-A simplified revision of the endoscopic septoplasty technique: For both aesthetic appearance and functionality.
CONCLUSION: This simple technique is feasible and minimally invasive, and may be particularly beneficial to patients with a deviated septum who seek to improve both their aesthetic appearance and nasal functionality. However, this method is not appropriate for those with a crooked nose caused by nasal bone deformity, lateral cartilages, and severe septal deformity. PMID: 26163238 [PubMed - in process]

Predictive significance of tissue eosinophilia for nasal polyp recurrence in the Chinese population.
CONCLUSION: A tissue eosinophil proportion of more than 27% of total cells or a tissue eosinophil absolute count of more than 55 eosinophils per high power field may act as a reliable prognostic indicator for nasal polyp recurrence within 2 years after surgery. Quantitative sinonasal symptom assessment in an unselected pediatric population with cystic fibrosis.
CONCLUSIONS: The SN-5 tool provides a quick, safe, and reliable qualitative metric for monitoring sinonasal symptoms in young children with CF. PMID: 26358346 [PubMed - in process]

Pediatric chronic rhinosinusitis.
Abstract The goal of this review is to elucidate the pathogenic factors, histopathologic features, and special considerations that relate to pediatric versus adult chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and to emphasize differences and similarities between the adult and pediatric conditions. Emphasis is placed on understanding of the differences in pathogenic mechanisms, host-microbial interactions, potential defects in innate antimicrobial immunity, and the role of biofilm formation in pediatric versus adult CRS and how these translate to different approaches toward both medical and surgical management. Pediatric CRS can b...

Asthma and orbital immunoglobulin G4-related disease.
CONCLUSION: Asthma is commonly associated with orbital IgG4-RD and generally manifests as adult-onset bronchial wall thickening seen at computed tomography, increased serum IgG4 levels, and good rituximab response. PMID: 26782673 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Extensive versus functional endoscopic sinus surgery for chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps and asthma: A 1-year study.
CONCLUSION: EESS for patients with CRSwNP and with asthma may help to improve the subjective olfaction and endoscopic appearance. PMID: 26980396 [PubMed - in process]

Stratified premedication strategy for the prevention of contrast media hypersensitivity in high-risk patients.
CONCLUSION: In a total severity-based stratified prophylaxis regimens and changing iodinated contrast media can be considered in patients with a history of previous hypersensitivity reaction to iodinated contrast media to reduce the risk of breakthrough reactions. Practice patterns in pediatric chronic rhinosinusitis: A survey of the American Rhinologic Society.
CONCLUSIONS: Most aspects of PCRS management among ARS members were aligned with published consensus statements. Adenoidectomy was almost always included as part of first-line surgical treatment but was also combined with adjunctive surgical procedures with moderate frequency. ESS was performed by a minority of rhinologists as a primary procedure for medically refractory PCRS but was favored when previous surgery failed. BCD was uncommonly used in PCRS. Culture-directed topical antibiotic treatment for chronic rhinosinusitis.
CONCLUSION: In patients with recalcitrant CRS, the use of topical antibiotics trended toward improvement in symptom severity and significantly improved endoscopic appearance. Furthermore, 72% had negative posttreatment culture results, meaning microbiological "control." The results of this study support the use of high-volume culture-directed topical antibiotics, and, in the future, more rigorous prospective studies are warranted. Olfactory cleft computed tomography analysis and olfaction in chronic rhinosinusitis.
CONCLUSION: Olfactory cleft opacification correlated with objective measures of olfaction in patients with CRS, which correlated with threshold values in patients with CRSsNP and all dimensions of olfaction in those with CRSwNP. PMID: 28124650 [PubMed - in process]
